Colombia to Panama crossing 2015

Hi guys, just wanted to know if anyone motorcycle travellers have crossed from Colombia to Panama lately by sailboat or ferry? We have 2 Honda XR125s and want to make the crossing in August. I believe the new ferry has stopped running until November. Any recommendations would be great.

Cheers, Adam.

Fritz of "Fritz the Cat" fame is advertising the new schedule for the San Blas Ferry

Leaves for Colombia from Panama June 30. Returns July 3rd. If it works out there may be a regular schedule......

Colombia to Panama crossing 2015

Currently there are a few options for Colombia to Panama:

- Ship by (shared) container and fly yourself.
- fly you and the bike
- San Blas Ferry
- Stahlratte sailboat

They all cost more or less the same, but with the Stahlratte you get more for your money.
If you are in a hurry, take a plane ( arrange everything well upfront)

We emailed many companies which in the past took motorbikes. Only The Stahlratte still takes motorbikes to Panama (Panama-Colombia I think there are more options).
We take the Stahlratte on 31 July.

Off course you can ask around in the harbour of Cartagena if there are private yacht owners willing to make some money.

I have also heard of some people who went from the small town of Turbo with speedboats. This involves changing boats a few times with no lifting facilities (so only advisable with a light bike).

Cheers guys, thanks for the advice - always nice to get some updates on the current situation. I will check out those options.

Thanks again, Adam.

Have you heard any reports about the Turbo route - price and difficulty, etc?

Cheers.

The other possibility for small bikes is catching a local freight boat which goes thru the villages along the coast some 5-7 days but cheap.

Colombia to Panama September 2015

Any word Adventure Hobo?

I'm currently in Medellin riding up from Argentina and looking at the Gap now...

If anyone else wants to coordinate we could do a shipping container.

Otherwise I'll probably going to try the Turbo Route, my friends just did panama to turbo and were stuck in turbo for 7 days but they finally made it. Thanks to Around gaia for that nice summary o the sea crossing.

I'll try to write my experience here afterwards.

cheers,
jebb

Hey Jebb Norton, because our temporary import papers for Colombia were expired we decided it would be best to cross the land border with Ecuador and head to Peru to sell our bikes as they are Peruvian and plus we were running out of time to travel Central America properly, so we didn't end up crossing into Panama. But we would take the Turbo route if we crossed as it's much cheaper which was well summarised by Around Gaia, check Mehmet's post. If you have the money, the Stahlratte seems like an easier option and likely a more beautiful travel experience. Good luck!

Would also be interested in hearing from anyone who has taken the Turbo route recently - certainly wish to do this as cheaply as possible.
