Ushuaia-Alaska or Alaska-Ushuaia

Hi people! I am new in HUBB!

I am Mauro from Bariloche, Argentina (Patagonia). I have done many trips around all Argentina and Chile with many little bikes (YBR 125, CBX 250, XR Tornado 250).

One of my dreams is to go around the world with the motorcycle, like many of you I think so.
In the next few month I have to decide what I will do. In a first place I want to start with Ushuaia-Alaska or Alaska-Ushuaia.

My big "problem" is... I dont have a lot of money to buy a big bike in argentina (like 600cc) and just ride relax, so I am looking for ways to buy a buy some bike in other country (Argentina is really expensive) and just forget Ushuaia (just because of Argentinian Laws with importation). For example, buy some bike in USA and go to south until Chile. Or Buy some bike in Chile/Bolivia and go north.

The fact is... Is there someone who knows about laws in USA/Bolivia/Chile who can explain me how to buy some bike being foregin? And If I can ride with this and take it out of the country?

I will be really happy if someone can help me with this!

Hello Mauro I have for sale a Yamaha XT600E for sale in Chile. I will be in Santiago from the 15th April this year.I bought the bike here in Santiago in January and have ridden to Ushuaia and back. The only thing i had to do to it is chanfe the tyres and chain. You can iwn the bike as a forigner, like i have done. Its not difficult but you will need someone in Chile to sponser you. Casa Matte hostel did it for me. My asking price is 2.200.000 chilean. Feel free to contact me for more information. Panneirs and riding lights and top box included. Thanks Paul

When you said sponser, what does it mean? Could you cross all the borders without any problem?

One problem you might have is that a tourist can bring a vehicle into most countries without paying taxes and duty - on the basis that they are visiting the country for a short time and agree to take the vehicle out with them within a certain number of days - all as per the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.

However, that agreement and exemption doesn't apply to a citizen of a country bringing in a foreign registered vehicle because then it may have to be permanently imported and there may be restrictions on the age of the vehicle or requirements for you to have owned it for some years before bringing it it, and maybe have to pay big import duty.

I talked to a couple from Argentian who had bought an RV in Canada and driven south and they were planning on driving through all the other countries in South America except Argentina because they would have to much trouble getting it in.

As usual, your situation might vary, but maybe your first place to start research is with your own Aduana. Otherwise getting to Ushuaia is going to be difficult. If you are on an Argentinian bike you will be free to ride anywhere because you will always be a visitor outside of Arg.

I am thinking to start out of my country (Argentina) due to aduana's stuffs.... So, If I am not understanding bad, with just a tourist Visa I can buy a motorcycle and start my trip, and just stay as long as I can with the tourist visa.
The couple that you met, Did they have someone in Canada who "sponsor" their trip that burb said?

The one thing you usually CANNOT do (without a lot of taxes and paperwork) is enter your own country with a bike that you own, but on foreign plates.

So bringing a Canadian-registered bike across the Argentinian border, if you are a citizen of Argentina, means you are importing your own vehicle and have to pay customs tax.

But yes, as a citizen of country "A" visiting country "B" as a tourist, you can often buy a local vehicle, register it in your name, and take it across borders into countries "C", "D", "E", etc., with just the temporary paperwork.

Once you get home to country "A" is when you have the problems.

Solution 1: Buy a bike in Argentina, go up to Alaska, sell it in Canada for scrap or put it on a container home.

Solution 2: Buy a bike in Canada, ride it to Chile, sell it before you cross the border into Argentina.
