BUT the basic rules of polite and civil conduct which everyone agreed to when signing up for the HUBB, will still apply, though moderation will be a LITTLE looser than elsewhere on the HUBB.

From Europe to North America by ferry! (Still not helpful to moto travellers.)

I was just watching a documentary about the islands of St Pierre and Miquelon - a French territory just off the coast of Newfoundland. They are essentially France/EU land, use euros, etc.

Apparently there is a direct flight from St Pierre to Paris! And a vehicle ferry that goes from St Pierre to Newfoundland in an hour and a half!

Unfortunately, the flight is a Boeing 737 (no cargo room for motorcycles), and the vehicle ferry doesn't carry vehicles, because the port on the Canadian side doesn't have a vehicle-capable ramp!

Ah well. Still, imagine the unique experience of flying off with just your EU ID card, then crossing into North America over the surface.

The French Overseas Collectivity of St. Pierre et Miquelon is a part of North America, just as French Guiana is a part of South America and Reunion is a part of Africa. The fact that euros and EU regulations prevail in all of these places doesn't alter the simple geographical facts.

Put another way, back when New France was a part of Britain (look it up), that didn't mean it somehow became a part of Europe....until it wasn't, starting in 1867. Nor are various little slivers of Antarctica, where passports are stamped in the name of a smattering of governing countries, located in South America, New Zealand, Australia, the US, or Europe.

Oh well, hey?

Mark

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
