Southern Africa insurance and visa

Hi I will be travelling around Mozambique Zimbabwe Botswana Malawi and South Africa starting next month.

Is it possible to get vehicle insurance to cover all countries? And the same question about visas, I thought I read a while ago you can obtain a multi visa

Thanks mike

Hi Mike

No visa needed for SA, Botswana and Malawi (if on UK Passport or most European Passports). For Zim and Moz you will have to get Visa. Zim in the Border, Moz depends on Nationality.

Botswana insurance is paid at the border on entering the country. South Africa insurance is included in the fuel costs so no upfront payment at all.

The replies above concern the legal minimum: 3rd party insurance and so I am not sure if this is what you really mean.

When you arrive in Namibia you'll have to buy temp 3rd party insurance from a local broker, usually around 50USD for a month. At the same time you can also buy a COMESA Yellow Card Insurance (again 3rd party) for any other countries you may plan on visiting.

Fully comp insurance can be arranged however it will be extraordinarily expensive.

No blanket visa for the area though.

I was looking at this. Found the AA website in South Africa "into Africa" section helpful. Looks like the might offer a combined policy - worth checking out?

Don't know about that but seeing Nam is not a signatory to Comesa you may have to buy it in the next available country:

That is interesting... looks like Comesa insurance can be purchased through AA in South Africa though the insurance would not cover anything in South Africa.

Not clear if this is available only to South Africa residents or to foreigners as well...

I am assuming you buy a policy for RSA and then add the yellow card for other countries.

Good question on the position for non-residents. Worth dropping them an email to see?

I am fortunate to have a brother living in Cape Town so my bike is registered in RSA in his name hence the residency issue is not a problem for me.

As an aside the individual country requirements was really helpful too.

Morning

I shipped my bike into Durban a few years back. I didn't organize a 3rd party insurance and nobody ever asked for one either. I was always told that you don't need one as a foreigner but i have no clue how it would work in a case of an accident.
Currently I own a car in SA and if course I have an insurance for it.
So either you risk it and drive without insurance or you start to call around and ask the different insurer if they are willing to insure a foreign car.
Here the link to my broker, maybe the can help http://www.swissfin.co.za/en/welcome/
