Buy a bike in Colombia, Peru or Ecuador

Hi all,

I am currently in Ecuador and looking to buy a bike to travel through South America. As I know that the prices in Ecuador are not the best, perhaps someone in Colombia or Peru has one for Sale? One with all the necessary travel gear and equipment would be amazing of course!

Maybe a traveller who had to return home due to Covid or an expat who knows someone that knows someone?

My budget is somewhere around 2-3K.

Any tips of help would be much appreciated!

Gracias

dvdbons,

Have the borders opened up? That would be great news to hear.

Have you contacted Freedom Bike Rental in Quito, Ecuador? https://www.freedombikerental.com/ They have a large collection of bikes for rent and probably sell bikes to keep their inventory fresh. I really don't know if they sell bikes, but I rented for a self-guided tour and think highly of their whole team, good service, and in-house mechanics.

Ecuador Bike Rental has an office in Guayaquil https://ecuadorbikerental.com/

It's worth taking some time to search and asking if a tour operator is selling their rental bikes. I prefer buying a bike that has some miles on it, to avoid any new bike issues. If the tour operator is good, the bikes are maintained after each rental...

Consider getting a small-bore Chinese bike. They are easier to find, low cost and cheap to maintain. Most of the locals ride Chinese bikes, so parts and mechanics are everywhere. The next choice is a Japnese bike.

Moto Colombia
They do a good job of explaining the key import, rent, buy, and selling a bike at the end of your trip issues. They have a buy-back program.

Colombia Moto Adventures
They offer a buy-back program and more.

Around the Block Moto Adventures
I joined a tour with friends and got to know the owners well. The next step, I bought a 250cc Chinese bike and have returned to Peru several times to ride it. When the time comes they offer a buy-back program. I am considering leveraging the buy-back to upgrade to a 300cc. I know the quality of their service and how well they maintain the bikes.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
