fencermatt is down

my son, fencermatt, has been posting on our trip to central and south america. The sad news is he broke his leg in Nicaragua today and is in the Riva hospital. He is stable and in good spirits.

I have sent a note to salcar, but if anyone else has information on how to ship 2 bikes out of Nicaragua I would appreciate the info. I looks like I may be able to get the bikes to Managua but then I haven´t a clue.

It will probably be a couple of days before I can do anything about the bikes, after all the son does come first.

Thanks for any help.

i replied to your email. i just talked to the owner of the custom agency that legalized my bike. they can get your motorcycles back to miami but we need to sort out the details. you are more than welcome to stay at my house.

right now i don't have car just my motorcycle so i cannot come pick you up. once you get to managua i'll be happy to help you sort out the shipment to the US. can also help you find a good doctor to look at your son...

Best,
S.

To bad his adventure had to end up like this. I wish your son a speedy recovery and hope he can continue his trip after he is healthy again.

Sorry to hear about your challenges. I hope you both are able to get home ok with your bikes and that your son's leg heals quickly.

Best of luck

Howdy all!

Thank you all for your concern (and thank you Salcar for all your help, including the use of your computer to make this post. I'm out of the hospital with a shiny new thigh-cast on and I'll be flying back to the USA on Tuesday. Hopefully, I will get to continue this trip in a few months, once I'm healed up but, alas, due to work and money stuff it'll probably be the old-fashioned way (backpack) rather than by bike.f

If any of y'all want a full story, check out my blog-post at:

Thank you all again,

Matt

my condolences matt. i was at ometepe in 2004 w/ a friend riding down to TDF. beautiful ride and slick as all hell. i know the island. quite starved of any sort of medical facilities so it's not surprising it took you 6.5 hours to get to a decent ward. the one thing i held dear about latin america was the latin americans. not a surprise this guy helped you out and opened his home. that's just what they do. to be honest you had the nicest ride at ometepe. from there we felt costa rica and panama paled in comparison so if it's any solace you probably hurt yourself on the last great moto ride going south to s. america. hopefully you'll pluck up soon b/c from colombia on down its a great ride!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
