GPS for Mexico and south america

Hi, does anyone know which GPS systems are best to use in Mexico and south america, or if they're not really worth the bother. Any info welcome. Tim

Exclamation re: GPS

I recently visited Costa Rica and used my Garmin, eTrex Vista. All worked well though minor dirt roads were generally not showed. The software was what came with it, NORTH AMERICA. For basic navigation it was good. A good detailed map book is better for off the main roads i suppose. Of course, it didn't appear that any main roads were not included. All that is to say, this small hand held woked well, larger screen is nicer and I would try and see if a specific download for Mexico is available.

For software, I was using Garmin WorldMap in SA, but I've recently downloaded far better maps for free off internet, from http://www.proyectomapear.com.ar/ and another from http://viajeros.freeservers.com/Viaj...pas/index.html. Sites only en Espanol, but if I can work it out then anyone can. They don't cover all of SA, but bits. I think there's even a routable version of Argentina just released.

Even without good maps, I find GPS very useful, although some people don't.

For hardware, so far I've been very pleased with my Quest. I'd be lost without it!

I use the basic Worldmap with a good roadmap and find it indespensible! It's nice to know exactly where on your roadmap you are even if the roads are inacurate.

Been using the Mapear v3 (routable) last couple of days and it´s a breath of fresh air! Just like being in Europe or US - you can even find nearest Gas stations, Hotels, etc. and route to them.

Maybe I´m getting lazy!!!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
