Buying tires in Ushuaia area

Hi,
I am now in Puerto Montt and heading down to Ushuaia. Seems I will need to replace my tires in Ushuaia, Punta Arenas or somewhere in the area.
Any suggestions where to best look for tires?
Does anyone know if Heidenau tires are available?

Alejandro Lago aka Alejandros workshop in Punta Arenas usually have a good selection of tyres, also Heidenaus. Prices are very expensive though, and the reviews he’s got on iOverlander are eh... mixed. Facebooksite: https://www.facebook.com/AlelagoWorkshop/

You can also ask at La Guarida in Punta Arenas, maybe they will know something. Its a motorbike cafe and shop who sells all kinds of assecories for bikers, THE meeting place for bikers in PA.

Argentina is usually crazy expensive for bike parts so I wouldnt expect something reasonably prices there.

There is also a shop in Osorno that has Heidenaus from my memory. It would be a detour/backtrack from Puerto Montt though....

I just checked the shop you mentioned in Osorno online (www.motoaventurachile.cl). They have the Heidenaus I need. But the prices are very expensive - exactly double of what they would cost back in Germany.

Do I have to expect to pay double for tires, or even more than double in Argentinia?

Chile: 320 Euro

here in Bolivia its difficult to find them, but if you do, expect to pay at least as much as in Chile, maybe even more ...

If you want the same as in Germany, yes you will pay double or more sometimes. And dont forget, people in Patagonia have to earn the money in the season (now) for the whole year ... and there are very high import duties in Argentina.

Remember that Heidenaus are imported and shipment and taxes are added upon the original price.

Ad Argentina - I was told that bikeparts was considered luxury items in Argentina and taxed thereafter. I bought a 525 DID chain for my bike in Salta and it ate my sprockets totally in 12 k kms and I paid gold and silver for it....it was obviously fake! So Im a bit sceptical to buy anything of bikeparts there.

But then again the inflation had been enormous in Argentina the last year - maybe you can find a tyre that was imported and priced 6-12 months ago, it should be cheaper by now...

I’d say go to Alejandro’s shop on calle Ona in Punta Arenas. He has a good selection and is a good mechanic. Of course the prices are high, you’re in Patagonia! It is true that he’s not the friendliest guy around, but he’ll do what you ask him and he’ll do it well. He services the bmw’s for a big tour company down there. I personally thought he was a very good and fair guy to deal with. I bought tires from him and I had parts shipped from Canada and he installed them for me.

If you think you’re going to get a better deal in Argentina, forget it. It’s going to be a lot more than in Chile and the selection is not good.

you can get Pretty well priced tires on Mercado Libre in Argentina if you look around, but most will not ship to Ushuaia or down there and there are no Heidenaus.
We just got Metzeler Karoos and Pirelli MT90 Scorpions for around 100 US per tire.
we picked them up from the post Office.
Just a thought.

Alelado's workshop is on Facebook and he replies promptly. I paid about USD 500 for new Heidenas fitted balanced. In New Zealand it would have been USD300.
His workshop is immaculate and he will clean your bike before he fits new tires. Just make sure any electrics like GPS etc are either removed or covered with a plastic bag if you don't want them full of water. The rear tire went flat by the next morning so must have been pinched on fitting as the valve was fine. Luckily I had not gone far. The workshop took it off and in the process destroyed the inner tube. Well is say destroyed as in my opinion it was too damaged to repair. Luckily I had a spare. The tires were not rebalanced.

I heard the KTM shop in Punta Arenas is about to stock a better range of tires. Michelin I think. Until last week they only had off road tires. Very helpful people at KTM

Im 12 months out of date but buying any imported product in Argentina will be difficult.See posts above probably all still relevant. KTM or they may call themselves Motorex in Punta Areas are easy to deal with. Be sure and carry at a new inner tube and call ahead for stock. To be 100% certain you could contact MotoAdventura Chile in Orsono and get your tires there. I believe they are associated with Alejandro in Punta Arenas. Others might have better news on Usuhaia
