I was in Santiago yesterday at a hotel downtown when the earthquake struck. Not an experience I want to repeat. I left Santiago yesterday and came to Concon on the coast (north of Valparaiso). The roads were fine coming here. I gather south of Santiago there are bridges and overpasses down. I´d recommend anyone traveling south head over to Mendoza and continue south from there in Argentina.

Yes i would not recommend going south for a few weeks at least.I was in Los Angeles(Chile) when it hit and it was total chaos down there.Couldn't get fuel, water or food.My friend lost his bike completely when a 20ft high double brick wall collapsed on top of it...$9500 worth of KLR 650 a total write off!!
The roads are ok in sections but there is wide spread damage with heaps of detours due to collapsed bridges and causeways etc.
We got back to Santiago two days later and as soon as my friend finalizes the paperwork on his new(2ndhand) Africa Twin we're pissing off to Mendoza and south from there.
SAFE TRAVELS

Hola Jose,

Any more update?
Currently in Mendoza and thinking of entering Santiago... a bit unsure about being a tourist in Chile at the moment. Any thoughts? Gracias.

Chile

Tourist in north is ok. I haven't been south yet but according to most travelers anywhere AWAY from Concepcion area is ok, tourism still on in Chiloe etc but getting colder.
Santiago is more or less unaffected except for very few buildings with mnor damage. I'll be here a few more days getting moto ready to go.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
