Hi Oz
The French side is easier if you want stealth camping - or just quietly use the Aires de Repos there. I've only had a police visit once, at 3.00 am, and they were just great when they saw I was just getting some sleep.
I dont know any campsites but I always stealth camp in France. England is impossible - too overcrowded, no suitable free space available. Campsites at stupid prices. Scotland is more free, if you're going there, but also ridiculous prices for campsites. Wales I don't know.
But you can always find a quiet corner in the ferry port buildings, either side of the Channel. The French side is more relaxed. Some ferry companies let you cross earlier than the time you booked - but not always, so just ask. It's easier for bikes. NorfolkLines is often the cheapest ferry, from Dunkerque.
Good luck
