From thailand to india via myanmar

Hi, I want ride via Myanmaru on motorcycle about September / October 2017. Who ride this way? We can ride together and way will be cheaper.

I hope all went according to plan and you've had a pleasant ride. Could you give me some pointers for this route? I'd like to fly in to Thailand, buy a bike, ride thru Myanmar, then explore India and Nepal. I'm just beginning my research and would appreciate your suggestions.

Its not going to be easy. Buying a bike in Thailand as a foreigner on a tourist visa can be difficult, you need a cerificate of recidency amongst others. And then when you have collected all your paperwork it still might take weeks and months before you got the registration paperwork and number plate. It took 2,5 months for me to get documents and plates last year. But this may vary from province to province. Your allowed to use your vehicle without (new) plates and updated documents - just show the purchasing paperwork - but to get into another country will not be possible.

Then to get into India and Nepal I presume you need a Carnet. And getting a Carnet for a thai plated vehicle is not going to be easy as there isnt any automobil organisation in Thailand that issues Carnets. However I have heard that the malaysian automobil organisation can provide Carnets for thai plated vehicles. So it should be possible that way.

Anyway - it would be great to hear experiences from those who have gone from Thailand through Myanmar and to India and Nepal on a thai plated vehicle...

Thanks a lot Snakeboy. I had totally overlooked the cdp and was thinking the hard part would be finding a way to cross myanmar without rushing thru or breaking the bank.

A couple of years ago I did buy a bike from BigWing in bangkok. The US embassy provides, um, sells the residence letter, and the dealership takes care of the rest. Like you said, the plate does take a while to arrive. In my case it took a month.

Having had it easy that time, I thought it might make sense to start in Thailand again, but oh well..

I think I’ll now fly to Jakarta, buy a bike, explore Indonesia, and sell it. Hopefully in that time I’ll come up with another idea of what to do next.

I’ve read a few of your posts but don’t recall... Are you in Indonesia?

I think it would be possible to buy a bike in Thailand and get a Carnet for it and then ride it through Myanmar and then into India and Nepal. But you will need a lot of patience and it would be timeconsuming and a bit costly as well.

Exploring Indonesia - yes I can recommend that very much. Its been the highlight of all the countries I have been travelling by motorbike in. I spent 3,5 months there in 2015.

I have parked my RTW-bike in Uruguay and will go back there after new year and pick it up and continue my RTW travel. Im in Thailand for the moment ad I bought a bike here last year. Im planning travels on that for later occasions.

Agree 100%. Spent 3 months from Dili to Medan in 2015, it was fantastic. My favourite in SE Asia and better than anything in the Americas IMO.

Just returned, currently in Myanmar headed for India.
