myanmar to laos border crossing

Hi everybody,

Does anybody know whether there is any offical possibility to cross the border between Myanmar and Laos with your own car? Heard that it will become more complicated to enter Thaíland, that´s why we are looking for alternatives.

Im quite sure that is not a possibility. Foreigners are not allowed to cross this border according to several sources such as Wikitravel

I also quite sure there are travel restrictions for foreigners in the northern parts of Myanmar and the area that you have to go through if going to the bordercrossing.

I have been in a protracted conversation with the Myanmar government. They want 10,000USD for the visa which will allow crossing the border by road from India and to Thailand with a few weeks in country. During the conversation I asked about other countries and got a swift no.

In my case there is also the Indian side permit problems.. I don't expect the price to drop so have started to look at China again...

It also seems to be a huge pain to find anyone who has been able to answer any questions. They did not seem to have anyone with a clue.
