Cool Myanmar - Overland independent travel possible?

Hi all,

Just wondering if its possible to ride through Myanmar without a guide? Want to enter from Thailand (Mae Sot) into Myawaddy, and exit into India (Tamu - Moreh border crossing)

Is this possible without a costly guide? The internet is pretty vague on this. Some sites say no, you need a guide, others say yes, but you need all your accommodation booked in advance.

Can someone please help me to clarify the situation there?

Many thanks in advance.

Assume you have also checked on the current situation in Thailand (there is a sticky thread on here), and the need for a carnet for India

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply. No, I was not aware of the current the situation in Thailand. Although reading through the whole thread it sounds like the situation is a fluid one and potentially subject to change. I am aware of the need of a carnet for India and I will sort that out before I leave Australia.

I traveled through Myanmar in May 2016 from the Chang Rai Border Thailand
Chiang Rai – Tachileik – Keng Tung
and then crossed from Myanmar into China at Lashio – Muse/Ruili border

I had a local guide who was very good as we had a Toyota Landcruiser he traveled with us but if you are on Bikes he does have his own Bike

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
