HU Destinations Tab - My Places

When looking at a destination that has a description in the new Destinations tab on HU, you can click a button that says Add to My Places.

Where do I find "My Places”? I can’t find anywhere that lists the places I’ve earmarked.

Thanks!!!

Hi,

Sorry I missed this - best place to ask me questions is in the website feedback forum.

To answer your question, sorry it's a little tricky while we're in transition from the old (www.horizons...) to the new (new.horizons... ) website.

Importantly, it works when you're where you'd expect it to work

On the Destinations page, (or any new.horizons page) at the top right you'll see "My account". Click that, you'll see your user name and a row of tabs. One of them is "My Places"!
You'll also see a map, with the places you've selected marked on it. You can then download a .GPX file of those places.
How cool is that?

We have lots more in the pipeline, enhancements to Destinations and much more, but it's going to take time. Development is expensive, and we don't make near enough to get it done nearly as fast as we'd like.

Memberships help pay the bills!

We also LOVE to hear your feedback and ideas, and what's good and bad about anything on the site! Most of the bad we know and is in the plans to make much better next time, but feel free to help push something higher on the list!

Hope that helps!

Thanks Grant! I think the Destinations Page is a great new feature. Hopefully folks will begin to populate it more. (I promise we will on our upcoming trip.)

Is it OK to add places we’ve read about or seen elsewhere, but not personally visited? For example, we have a travel agent friend that is recommending places to us. Also, in some of the recently published overlanding books I’ve read there are some sights and specific hotels that are recommended.

You're welcome, thanks for asking, and especially for putting in content! Much as we'd like to we don't have time, we're already way too busy. HU started on the premise of travellers helping travellers with information, and inspiration, and continues to do so. The more people input, the more helpful it is for all.
We love the Destinations feature, it's something we've been planning for a VERY long time - it's embarrassing to admit how long - but it's finally year, and we look forward to many thousands of places, and being able to plan your route to anywhere in the world on it. We have lots more in mind for it, and it will only get better!

Sure, we're fine with that. We put in the top 600 destinations in the world we could find to start it off. I confess I haven't put in a few personal ones myself yet, but will asap! (Susan says yeah, Christmas 2023...)
Put in the details as best you can, and at some point we'll have a ratings system for travellers to rate the destination.

In the meantime anyone visiting the Destination can put in their EXPERIENCE of it - what they thought, good bad or terrible about it. Also photos are VERY important and helpful. One way to tell if a hotel is any good is actual photos of a room as you found it - nice and clean and tidy or a sty?
Also of course great overviews of scenic spots, attractions, campsites etc are all very helpful. Make sure you have permission to use any photos - preferably they're yours, we don't want copyright issues!

Thanks!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
