Visas for China and shipping from SE Asia

We were originally planning to drive from the UK to Vladivostok however we would quite like to drive through China and to SEA. However two problems
Firstly we are having real problems finding out if we can get a Chinese visa en route, you can only get the visa 3mths before entry and we would have already left the UK, but I don't know if you can obtain the visa from a country where you are just a tourist and it isn't your country of origin. I have email a number of embassies to no avail.
Secondly should we manage to get through China to SEA where is the best place to ship our vehicle from and does anyone have any shipping agency details we would want a container for our VW 4x4
Hoping someone out there can help
in advance

I´d probably try to ship out of Port Klang, Malaysia, and Bangkok would be my #2 option. Got a friend, who just shipped his bike by sea out of Bangkok, I should very soon get to know, how it went. I´m sure he´ll have the details of the agent that he used, too.

I hope you are well aware of the special requirements for doing China with your own vehicle? For example this thread could be useful:

Thanks for this and the tips re shipping, if you could find out about the agents that would be amazing We have been in touch with someone called Bing at Navo travels and could be part of a convoy plus I have also been in touch with some other overlanders who would also be interested, it does seem to be a lot of expensive paperwork thats for sure!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
