Adventure lite in Andorra and Spain
for 2-3 weeks.
Off-road riding and camping, that's the plan for 2026. I don't have much experience with either.
Camping should be fine on commercial camp grounds. Not feeling experienced enough for wild camping / bivouacing, legal situation aside. I intent staying a few days at least, so that I don't have to set up each day, and can go on rides with minimal luggage.
As for Andorra & Spain: It's mainly for practicing the language. Being well aware that prevailing local dialects might pose a challenge to this goal. But of course, both on and off road riding there is said to be top notch, too. And the food...
Now the riding part. I did a few days off-road on a rented 250cc with knobbies. This time, I'll be riding my Big Mama (Africa Twin Adventure Sports). So I'm looking for non-paved roads, but not super challenging. TET and Wikiloc provide some ideas, but I'm having a hard time judging whether I'll be able to do these as an off-road beginner on a big & heavy bike.
Starting from Switzerland, my idea is to ride to Andorra on paved roads, enjoy a bunch of passes in the Alps and Cévennes, stay in hotels for one night each. Then set up tent in Andorra, put dual sports tires on the bike and explore the area for a few days.
After that... well. I guess the weather may become a deciding factor? Seems like, on average, July is the best time for camping in Andorra. Which would be too hot for southern Spain. Going north through the Pyrenees to Picos de Europa might work out well both for weather and off-road opportunities.
And that's really as far as I got in planning. Looking for input of all kinds - information, questions, criticism, confirmation...

Andorra la Vella is at 1,000 metres which has some bearing on temperatures, but I suspect you will still find July rather hot for camping. A campsite with a good amount of shade would be a benefit.
There's certainly some good trailing riding in the Pyrenees, I participated in a HU-organised 'Mountain Madness' orienteering event a decade or so back which was great fun. A large scale local map would be a benefit, sorry I can't specify what we were using.
Do you need to change tyres? It's only 1,000km to Andorra, I often ride that far on knobblies without adverse effect.

its sound good! im from spain and pirineos are good destiny. ¿are you from swizerland? we can asume yo will not afraid about high mountain wheather.... like the alps, yo must avoid winter time, the best roads are closed.
both countries, spain and andorra, has a very permisive laws for traveling and do some dirt roads. pirineos are very popular destination for bikers.
campings are cheap and you always will found a empty place for a alone rider whit tent.
1 person + bike + tent = about 15-18€ per day.
enjoy!!

¡Gracias, amigo!
Soy alemán, pero vivo en Suiza. I'm doing alright riding steep twisties in the mountains on paved roads, even when the weather is not so great. Just not used to non-paved roads, so I will try and err on the side of caution. Especially when riding alone.

Which time of the year would you recommend? At the moment, my plans aren't set yet.

Let's say Andorra is the place from where on I need rubber for rough terrain. Where I live, basically everything that's not paved is illegal to ride - so road tires it is. Depending on the state of them, I might change them at home, or ride 'em down to Andorra and order ahead.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
