Oman to Switzerland

I am returning home from Oman in June 2015 hoping to ride back on my Enfield. I request advice on the bast route to take and other nuggets of wisdom one may have, especially considering it will be Ramadan during this time and I will be traveling alone. Thank you.

My suggestion

I am just looking at doing the same thing. Except I will be with the Wife.

Not sure where you are in Oman - but I am planning on leaving after Ramandan...
I am in Muscat/MQ area if you fancy a "route/trip exchange".

My route will be

Oman
UAE
Iran
Turkey
Greece
Romania
Hungary

Then up to me.

I do not believe there is any other way !!!

I have already started amassing Iran info/CDP/Export procedures. Happy to share if you want. Also well stocked up with Electronic Maps...

Regards

You'r just down the road

I'm in Al Khuwair, and thank you for your reply.

You are way ahead of me but yes, that did seem the most probable route to take, in the present climate. If you wouldn't mind sharing your Iran/Export procedures that would be great. I was intending to visit the Iran Embassy this coming week. Who are you using for bike insurance?

Will you be spending much time in Iran?

Thanks again Deepstar, for getting in touch and I appreciate you sharing.

I will dig out the Iran info... and try and put together the Oman side of the export procedure.

The people up at the Oman-Automabile Association (go-kart track up near Seeb airport), are the people who issue the CDP. You will need to put 300 OR (I think) down for the CDP. When you send the plates back - you get most (I can not just remember how much that means... but 80%+ from memory) of your money back.

The slightly tricky bit is the "blue plate" or export place. When you cancel your Yellow plate here - you then have 7 days to get out of Oman. Now with Ramadan being a factor - you may want to have a look switching to blue plates, and then riding the bike to the UAE (if you have friends/contacts who can look after it). That would at least be a job - done - and no ROP will-they or won't-they hassels.

The other factor to think about - is are you coming back here ???

Companies need to get expatriate visa's cancelled (more so than ever as the Ministray of Labour is being more difficult) - and that may mean your company P.R.O. will have to travel to the border to do this. You are not supposed to cancel at the airport and then be allowed to ride on.

If you move your bike to UAE.... fly in.... cancel at the airport.... fly to UAE.... it may be easier for you. Heck - you could probably park the Enfield at the airport

Iran Visa's are now being handled by Bahwan travel I believe. I would be interested in how you get on with this process. Do we need to still give the Iran Govt a small C.V. ??

I would like to spend some time in Iran - but.... unlikely. The weather window for the getting to the UK will start closing I think at the end of October - So I would prefer to see more of Southern/Eastern Europe. I just had 25 years () in the middle east

Bike Insurance:
Oman - already have
UAE - buy on the Border easy
Iran - Buy on the Border
Turkey - on the Border (No Greeen Card I believe)
Greece onwards ... Greencard .... Green Card

Personal Insurance:
World Nomands

Hope this info helps - I will add more when I get some time....

Deepstar

PS I will PM you my GSM...

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
