Hi Ian,

I haven't looked into using a large paper map for planning; however, I carry paper maps as backups.

I've been using maps.me app to plan my route and also update whilst travelling too. I bookmark towns/cities, accommodation, garages, shops, fuel stations, borders, embassies etc. I can zoom in and out to see more/less detail. It can be used offline. It's also backed up, so I can recover it if I loose my phone. I realise it's now what you asked for, but hope it helps all the same.

All the best
Steve

You can get them on Amazon but they're not that cheap (£10 or so) and not that good. I haven't seen any really cheap ones for a while.

When we were USA route planning we got free 3ft x 3ft (1m square in euro speak) maps from KOA campsites. It had their 400+ campsites located but you could ignore that and cover it in black felt tip routes. If you changed your mind you could just throw it away and get another one.

I'm not aware of any Euro organisations promoting themselves like that but if there are any others may know.

https://www.interkart.de/en/national...rge-size.html# is one.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=europe&rh...ref=nb_sb_noss is the relevant product category on Amazon.

You can usually find them in a large local bookstore, or you can just find a good high-res image on the Internet, and go to a local print/copy shop and ask them to print it out for you on a plotter, in the size you want. It's not terribly expensive.

I wanted paper to plan also. Michelin map of Europe is big and 2 of them would give you north up to Nordkapp and south to Sicely. Or you can just flip the map over. Got mine from Amazon.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
