Entering Iran with Motorcycle as an American

Hello everyone,
I am planning a Silk Road trip and Iran is high on my list of places to visit along the way. Furhermore, being able to travel through Iran would make route planning much easier and blow the door to the Stans wide open. The issue is that I am a US citizen. I was wondering what the proccess would be like (if possible)for me to drive into Iran. Everything I have looked at seems to be for UK tourists. Can anyone shed light on the process for me? Is is too much trouble to be worth it? What would the cost be?

I am not sure of the exact requirements but both UK and US citizens required a guide to go through Iran, pre-covid of course. If it is a viable option it is a great country to visit with friendly hospitable people but they also usually require a carnet de passage for the bike which adds another expense and hassle.
You could take the more popular route and get the ferry across the Caspian from Azerbaijan to Kazhakstan.

The ferry is the route I hope to take in 2021, since 2020 is out.

I’m thinking UK to Oz but if you go Caspian - Kazakhstan, how do you get down into India?

Another guide through China?
The tribal lands in Pakistan?

You need a guide to cross the corner of China that leads to Pakistan, your arrive on the KKH into Northern Pakistan which is not the tribal areas and the safest, most beautiful part of the country.

Hi there,

I was thinking of travelling from Europe down to Kuala Lumpur in 2022. My plan is to ride accross Turkey, Iran and then link it to the Pamir. Then crossing China, which apparently you need a pre-arranged tour, and get to Pakistan. The least expensive tour i managed to find is 1.1k USD for 5 days, riding from: IRKESHTAM (Kirgyzstan) --> KASHGAR (China) --> TASHFURGHAN (China).

Afterwards continuing through India until Malaysia.

If you need any info detailed info, please reach me. happy to share my findings.

take care.

following this thread...

we are also wanting to travel from turkey to india. Iran looks like you need a guide the whole time? is this true? I wonder if you can pay someone to accompany you in another vehicle?

Also...is Afghanistan totally out of the question?

It would be helpful if you told us something about yourself particularly which country you are from and type of vehicle before anyone can answer this question.

Iran

Hi
I traveled through Iran back in August 2019 with my NZ registered Toyota Landcruiser.
I had arranged for our Iranian guide to meet us at the Turkish border and we took him along with us till we exited Iran at the Azerbaijan border. It was a fantastic 6 weeks. Highly recommend Iran.
Our guide was fantastic and sorted all border crossing paperwork and anything that cropped up.

His name is : Hossein Ravanyar (Old Hossein) email: mr_hossein_ir@yahoo.com
he is also on whatsap. Can highly recommend him
