Toyota Landcruiser 80 (1996 24v 4.2 TD) for overland travel located in UK

Toyota Landcruiser 80 (1996 24v 4.2 TD)

This must be one of the best examples of an overland vehicle in Britain. The latest set-up has been proven to work over the last 10 years taking us across Siberia and then from Alaska to Terra del fuego.
This vehicle as I have been led to believe, has never been used in a British winter. The first owner mainly used it to tow a caravan around Spain during the winter, I bought it in 2006 with a FSH and 110k miles recorded and we have only used it for overland travel.
Mechanically this is sound and good to go, after fitting new tires, to cross another continent. Since the last trip I have serviced everything and I mean everything.

Front Axle: Birfield, Wheel bearings, knuckle bearings and all seals / gaskets changed if required. Diff re-built with new bearings.

Rear Axle: Wheel bearings and oil/dust seals replaced. Diff re-built with new bearings.
Diff ring gear has been changed to 410 ratio, speedo shows correct reading with 33” tires.

Front & Rear propshaft rebuilt with new spider joint.

The above has been done, before each major trip.

This time I have had a new sliding joint fitted to the front and rear propshaft.

I went through many spider joints over the year some replaced on the road( they do not like water) another reason of the wearing spider joints is a worn sliding joint!

The Gearbox has been stripped and re-built with new bearings. It turned out that all the original bearings and thrust washers were in spec!

Engine: Fuel pump striped and rebuilt with new parts as required and setup to work with a fitted intercooler and the injectors have been refurbished. Cam belt and tensioner replaced around 10k miles ago.

Engine starts first every time weather hot or cold at sea level or at 5000m. Does not burn oil, oil stays relativity clear for the first 500miles. Oil has been changed every 5000 miles since I have had it.

A low radiator fluid sensor has been fitted to the header tank to give an early warning before the level gets close to the head.

An intercooler has been fitted mainly to improve MPG, leaving boost around 10psi.

Brakes front and rear have been refurbished and the exposed brake pipes have been change. The front / rear balance valve has been changed and the balance adjusted for this setup.

Additional Equipment fitted

HD front winch bumper with a winch fitted, using a synthetic rope. Controlled either by cable or a remote. Day LED day lights fitted flush in the bumper.

ARB twin wheel rear carrier.

Longrange 170ltr stainless steel aux. fuel tank, transfers fuel to the main tank from a switch within the cabin. Uses a Toyota valve to switch between tanks when filling. The bottom of the tank has a 6mm aluminium custom made bash plate for protection.

There is also a custom made bash plate covering the gearbox and transfer box, with another bash plate to help protect the steering tie rods.

Pop-up roof made out of Aluminium plate, with light weight composite board. The sleeping floor is also made out of light weight composite board adding roughly 30kg over the standard roof.

double solar panels supply up to 200w to the two auxiliary deep cycle batteries. This more than enough to run the Engel fridge/freezer and other electrical items whilst camping. These batteries are charged through a Sterling 60amp battery to battery charger, which tricks the alternator to charge the batteries at a fast rate.

There is a 70ltr cold water tank and a 25ltr heat exchanger that has been connected to the engine cooling system taking the heat from the radiator, giving hot and cold water supply. The water is filtered through 2 stage filters and a UV filter which can be turned on or off.

There is a shower outlet fitted at the back.

The inside has been fitted out with fitted units made out of light weight flight case material, giving ample storage space. A combined kitchen sink and a 2 ring burner with a glass cover. There is also a secret compartment for those items you need to keep hidden.

A 42/45 ltr Engel.

Erbacher diesel heater has been fitted and has been modified to work up to 3000mts though probably work up to 4000mts.

A 300w 12v to 240v inverter is also fitted.

An external aerial for the Garmin GPS and may work for other systems.

An external WiFi booster aerial is fitted

A custom made aluminium box designed to fit on the front section of the roof for those bulky yet relativity light items, like winter clothing, walking boots etc.

A pair of Maxtrac ladders(very useful).

Front seats fitted with new Escape Gear seat covers.

Spares

Starter motor
Alternator
Repair kit for Starter motor
Water pump( the original)
various bearings for wheels, and swivel joints.
various dust seals/oil seals

Cam pulley locking tool.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
