is hyundai galloper a good idea?

i am planing on getting myself a Hyundai galloper 97. i have read a previous post here from 2005 where people have said that it is kinda unreliable and can shake itself apart offroad. i plan on stripping it quite a bit and reworking the suspension, lifting the car a bit (about 15cm, 5 just the body and 10 the entire suspension) and kinda tinkering with it, and use it for overlanding trips in EU and a dries distance from Slovenia (like a trip with friends to finland etc....).
i like the fact that it has a reductor and rear live axle, and am thinking of getting teh long version, what is your opinion on this?

IIRC it's largely a previous-gen Mitsubishi Pajero produced under license. I've seen a fair number of them used for farm/countryside stuff.

You can find bad reviews about anything online. If you're starting completely from zero and just looking for models, then yeah, the right answer is always a Land Cruiser. If you've got a Galloper in good condition that you're starting out with, you'll be absolutely fine. Especially if you're sticking to Europe, where you can get parts pretty easily.

I see them around here now and then, they indeed look like an old LWB Pajero. People travel in Land Rovers and I'm pretty sure a Hyundai will have better build quality. Probably not worth spending a lot of money on though.

My question is more why you would want a heavy 4x4 for trips in the EU, why not get a Sprinter or a T4?

well, i plan on going on trips with a few friends (3 or 4) and i want us to be able to move all our stuff with us, i am also thinking of transporting a dirt bike inside the car. and i think they look good. also, the long version is for whatever reason cheaper where im from (ill probably spend around 2.5k eur)

Not gonna fit a dirtbike comfortably, I don't think... it's a body-on-frame design, it's large but not THAT roomy inside.

Unless you actively want to go offroad on your trips - and I mean TET, not just forest roads to a campsite - get a van. Plenty of H2L3 vans out there with already a cargo wall between the center seat row and the rear cargo space, easy to mount a front wheel chock and strap hooks, etc. You can even get already fully equipped dirtbike-carrier vans from motocross racing teams, they pop up on the market regularly.

Of course, if you just like Gallopers and can find a cheap one in good condition, absolutely go ahead and get it - best car is the one you want to drive.

Recently I did wrote about important decisions for extended travels. The vehicle itself was not the most important point there - all is about - how you want to live during travelling:

But yes - the depending on the travel targets - the spare part situation can be a big issue. On my last 119`000 Kilometers I did has to replace the front screen three times as an example. Depending on the travel target an exotic car could be hard to maintain....

Easy to consider that point of spare part availability by yourself, choose 3 most common spare parts - and try to find them in the country(s) you like to travel. Try it online, try to call local mechanics. Suggestion: 1x front screen, 1x alternator, 1x water pump.
