Importing Motorbike into Mongolia

Hi guys,

I want to sell a motorbike that I brought into Mongolia overland from Europe, telling the customs people that I'd exit via Russia.

Does anybody know how to do this? Do they check whether you have a vehicle with you on exit, in my case at the airport?

EDIT: there is no special stamp in my passport. However, they put the vehicle data into a computer system and printed a slip of paper. It also includes my passport number.

You need that piece of paper to show customs, so who ever buys the bike pays the duties or taxes due..
It's a paperwork excercise .....

You need to officially sell and get a paper from customs and import duty needs to be paid, I think it was about 10%. They are pretty switched on and will determine the value from eBay for similar bikes.

You probably could leave without them noticing but may get into trouble for future entries. You'd also make life harder for future travelers. The more people do this, the stricter the rules get. It has already been tightened up. Customs do not have any love for the Mongol Rally yahoos "donating" their beat up joy rides. You'll be burning some serious carma points.

Yep.
A) See the customs people and find out what they want. Could be a %.
B) Find a buyer and what they will pay.

Then match $ of B) with $ of A). If it anit worth it .. ride away. May be the russian customs would be less? Don't know. You could ask.

Hi guys, yes I sale my bike but the buyer payed the custom. I will ask him how much but it depend to the age of the bike ! It's about 10% to 17% of the value they calculate.
I take my flight home in a few days so I will give you some news but I hope I will have no trouble at the airport.
I will advice biker who want to sale the bike to go to Oasis Guesthouse, there is a lot of bikers and the owner now some sellers.
You can also try to contact Eco Moto Club on Facebook or ask to be add in Moto zar group in facebook also.

Thanks for you replies guys! Oasis is really the place to go to in UB as a biker, so many travelers! And Wiener Schnitzel! The owner also provides assistance in sending bikes back to Europe.

I sold the bike to Motorsport Mongolia (Geezer-J). He and Unubold (also from Motorsports Mongolia) handled the paperwork, it was swift, friendly & painless.

Nobody stopped me at the airport or asked for any papers. :-)

Hey Hakkenouw,

I posted an ad in the buy/sell board here on the HUBB and got a fair offer by GeezerJ.

Also, the ladies working at the Oasis Guesthouse in Ulaan Baatar know people who are interested in buying motorcycles. AFAIK, importing into Mongolia is easier than importing into Russia.
