uk rider buying and insuring bike in Halifax NS

Hi All...
I'm planning to start an across Canada bike trip from Halifax in early May. I'm considering buying a new bike there and heading out....from what I understand buying and registering are doable but I can't find any concrete info on insuring the bike as a foreign visitor. I've spoken to Motorcycle Express, HC Travel and Fernet and I've searched the net high and low...possibilities but a bit fuzzy at the moment. I've also read the report from Nicogsx on the BC situation but really want to travel East to West. SO.... anyone one got info on brokers or insurance providers that will cover foreign visitor..??? In addition to that lot...if any of you guys have experience of the TAT or trans Canada trail or you have interesting thoughts on Canada/US tour... or if you're up for a bit of ride or a meet up for a then drop me a line and say Hi. Cheers...Barney.

Hi Jaak…Thanks for your thoughts my friend but I've got the US insurance sorted, it's Canada I'm having a bit of trouble with. Although it looks like there might be some light at the end of the tunnel soon via HC Travel in the UK, I will post up the outcome in due course. Where are you currently Jaak...Belgium or out and about..?

I really need to change my username. Jaak is the name for my bike :-). My name is David. I’m back in Belgium since November, saving and planning for a new adventure with my rebuild 100gs. Still working on it. Is the insurance not same one, US and Canada. Ours was.

Barney:

It is my understanding that any insurance policy issued in any one of the 50 US states or 12 Canadian provinces will meet the minimum requirements for liability insurance in all 50 states and all 12 provinces.

I believe that you are obliged to purchase your insurance in the state or province that your vehicle is plated in. So, first determine where you will register your vehicle, then, investigate insurance in that state or province.

Michael

Michael’s got it right. If you buy and register in Nova Scotia, you insure in Nova Scotia. No reason to concern yourself with US insurance in that case.

Correct all around US insurance covers Canada and vice versa but I've been told that by Fernet that they can issue policy for most but not all states to register a bike. Also been told that the new foreign riders policy that is being finalised will cover for US or Canadian bike registrations..more investigation required...!! What I'm really looking for is some info on a brokers in Halifax that will issue policies to foreign visitors who want to buy a bike in Halifax....over the next few days I will start ringing them and see what I come up with. David...where is your next trip and are you rebuilding the gs100 yourself..?..sounds good...got any pics..?

I’m trying to do it myself with help of some other people. I’m following an evening course mechanics so I get a lot of help from them. I have not really a technical background but learning fast. At this moment the bikes (I’m also doing the one of my wife a 80gs) are still in a lot of pieces and in boxes. Will post some pictures once things are coming together and I can show something. Plan is to go east in 1 to 2 years depending on the progress of the build and the preparation.

unless you pay in cash, that bike wont go anywhere without insurance.the dealer and bank will make sure of it. otherwise contact an insurance agent, request dairyland insurance, they also include 5000 medical coverage per accident per person,

Awesome David...!!! I've been trying to teach myself bike mechanics for some years now...with varying results but slow and steady progress has been made. I've been stripping and rebuilding various bikes over the years...all have gone back together and been all over Europe. I'm pretty good on chassis stuff and have even ventured into the engine...electrics are largely a mystery but i'm doing my best. I've tried to find evening classes in the UK but can never seem to find one...strange. OK..cool...good luck with your projects Davis...I would be interested to be kept up to date with your progress. Cheers...

Hi Yokesman…
I'll have to pay cash...don't think there will be any finance for foreigners. I have no intention of riding without insurance so will be contacting brokers this week.I think the dairyland foreign riders policy is no longer available but another supplier has just been sourced so I'm looking at that also. Cheers..
