I strongly agree with Andrasz. It's also easier, and safer to carry extra water inside the cab if needed. Ultimately you have to figure out more or less the distance between refueling points on your chosen track and calculate your estimated fuel consumption. Naturally you’ll need a lot more fuel in the sand. Sometimes 3 times as much depends on how difficult the terrain is.
I would go as far as convert the water tank into a fuel tank and carry my water inside the car. But that’s me.
You won’t get far if you’re dehydrated, but you won’t get anywhere without fuel.
