Problems in Morocco

Hi all,

I have been seeing some worrying reports about Morocco and terrorism. Is the UK news exaggerating the situation or is it fairly safe in reality?

Or do we just need to stay away from Casablanca and Rabat?

We live in a dangerous world, especially after Sep. 11. In many countries are little groups preparing terrorist acts. The newest example was in Germany, fortunately the police found out about it, before something happened. Would you avoid Germany now? Also in USA there are often terrorism warnings. I consider Morocco not more endangered than European countries. But since it is an arabic, islamic country people are much more afraid.
But nobody knows where the next attack will happen. Can be in every country. Or hopefully never.

When was it last time you had information about terror attacks in Morocco? Have I missed something?

To tell the truth, yes, there were some minor events. After the internet café in Casablanca in Spring the was something in Meknes, but it went wrong.

I think, that Morocco isn´t more or less dangerous as other countries - as Edith said. We are starting the 26. Sept for a 7 week turn with really old motorcycles. If you want to know: Yesterdays

With the exception of the Northern Ireland 'troubles' , the bombing of the Grand Hotel in Brighton and the 1996 Manchester bombing (this is starting to sound like a Monty Python sketch), most incidents in the UK take place in London. Unfortunately London is also a key tourism venue.

Apart from the failed Meknes suicide bombing, the few Moroccan incidents that have taken place have been near Casablanca/Rabat. However Casa is not a tourism venue.

Since 1972 I have accumulated more than a year in Morocco and IMHO there is no doubt that it is a far safer country than the UK. The level of crime in the UK caused by drug addiction and the alcohol-related violence are frightening. By comparison, the worst that ever happens to me in Morocco is occasionally being ripped off when I don't know the correct local price for something.

Winterbiker: I'll be in Morocco for three or so weeks from 25/26 Sep (entering via Melilla) so I'll keep an eye open for you.

we are entering on 28. Sept. in Tanger. Our route: Fez -heading south to Erfoud, than west to Quarzazate and further on to the coast and than south to Dakhla.

If you see anywhere to old rigs - that´s my friend and me.

The elections in Morocco went off without a hitch last week and if anything was going to happen it would have happened around this time. The Police here actually routed out the seed family responsible for the Casablanca attacks last spring and everythings gone quiet since then. S**t happens everywhere and believe me, you have a better chance of running afoul in Spain or London!

Yella - Come on - you'll love it! The people are friendly, the food is good, its an amazing place.

I've some friend currently in Morocco and except 6 or 7 punctures, they didn't noticed any problem.
don't worry, ride happy, Morocco isn't more or less dangerous than england france and so on.

I expect that is because they have an old-fashioned set of values based on the family as the primary unit of stability and education, with a government that has not, as yet anyway, adopted political correctness as a means of deceiving the public -- or is there something about Morocco that I don't understand?
Never been there BTW, but I am getting interested!!

Also I believe the police will not be very nice to a moroccan caught messing with a tourist...

If you are worrying about this then you really are on the wrong forum!

How about a nice safe package holiday in spain (oh they had some bombings there as well).

This is an adventureous travel forum. Yes there are some risks but with some common sense and knowledge then no problems!

I suspect a saturday night out on the in a northern town is much more dangerous given the levels of voilence I have seen!

get a grip or get off the forum!

The risks of motorcycling in the sahara desert is worth much more effort in countering than the risk of terrorism!
