e reader or tablet for guide books??
Hi folks. I was thinking of getting a kindle (or similar) to reduce the amount of paper being lugged round on my nxt trip. I was wondering how usefull the Lp/rough guide type guidebooks were on these things, mainly the city maps? Im wondering if a cheep tablet would work better? I like the battery life and simplicity of the kindles, dont need any kind of internet nonsense, but find the city maps in guidebooks usefull. Cheers. Karl.

I have used a cheap Kindle for this very purpose. My main gripes with the model I bought is I miss the colour in maps and photographs and it is not backlit (the bonus is longer battery life). Although books are bulky, you can not break them

Kindles are great for carrying a stack of lonely planets - they are also just amazing bits to carry for downtime, if you enjoy a bit of a read.

TBH .. For maps and pdf's they aren't that great, but then you probably have a stand alone GPS or two that will have maps loaded that will do the job.

I find the kindles, although not waterproof can handle a bit of rain water. They are very light, quite robust with a long battery life.

I don't own a tablet at all, I find that I can do everything that I want to do on an iPhone, and for other duties a laptop.

I hate using a Kindle for travel guides. Too much of a hassle looking something up, or looking at maps etc. Great for reading other books though

We only travel with one smart phone (my husband) and one tablet (me) and that is enough. So I load guide books on my iPad.


Not ideal when walking around in towns though, if you need to consult the map in busy streets. But I usually do small paper drawings if I am worried (rarely).


The maps on the travel guides are often wrong or out of date.


So I rely on Google maps, map.me and for Central Asia/Russia the excellent Yandex, to find ATM, banks, hotels or anything really.


The tablet is better as you can then take a screen shot (picture) of the map so no need to have wifi when you need the map. So for me, it's tablet anytime!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
