Problem loading OSM to garmin Zumo

Hello Rob here,

Im on the road with a fellow traveller who has a garmin sumo, I have the montana.

We are having problems loading the maps onto the sumo. I have attempted to upload maps to his sumo via the micro sd and the maps are on his sd and when I enter his SD into my montana it works perfectly with the maps.

Is there a setting we need to change to allow his sat nav to pick up these maps?
Any help is much appreciated.
We will be with WIFI for the next couple of days too.

It may be necessary for you to 'select' the new OSM mapset on the Zumo, this so that the Zumo will use that mapset.

You don't mention what model of Zumo you have, so, here are the instructions for the 660 (the most common Zumo):

1) Press 'Tools' from the main screen.
2) Press 'Settings'.
3) Press 'Map'
4) Press 'Map Info' (a small square at the bottom middle of the screen)

You will now see a list of the maps installed on the device. Your recent install of OSM should be on that list, likely it will NOT have a check mark beside it. Touch the empty check mark box to put a check mark in the box.

5) Press and hold (for a few seconds) the BACK button. This will take you back to the main screen. Now press 'View Map' and you should see the OSM mapset data appear.

Thanks. We have tried this and its not showing. Maybe we are doing something wrong...

But it works no problem in mine its automatic. So the maps are on the card and functional.

Yes its the zumo 660.

the Zumo 660 is peculiar about how maps are installed (more so than most of the Garmin outdoors devices). I assume you "installed" the map by putting a .img file on the SD card?
There's a couple of things to pay attention to:
1. the file needs to be placed in the correct folder, either on the internal memory or on the SD Card map files need to go in the "Garmin\" folder that is directly on the root of the internal memory or the SD Card
2. the file needs a specific file name: "gmapsupp.img"
3. follow the instructions from Michael to activate the map afterwards.

If that doesn't work for you I don't know either what else could still be wrong.

Hmm still tried this and not worked, we must have done something wrong. I think Daren is going to reset and reupload some old information on the sumo in case we deleted the wrong thing.

He will add to this thread if need be.

Thanks for your input people!

Rob:

It is not necessary that the OSM map file be named 'gmapsupp' or similar, but it is necessary that the OSM map have the file suffix '.img'. You can put the map file on either the device itself or the SD card, it doesn't matter which.

Below are three photos. The larger one shows the contents of the internal memory of my Zumo 660. The next one shows the contents of the SD card in my 660. The final one shows the choices available to me on the map menu.

I used an OSM map when I was in Morocco (it's no longer installed on the device), I can't remember what the file name was, but I don't think it was 'gmapsupp' or anything like that.

So, I suggest you check and make sure that your map file has the file suffix '.img'.
