Unconfirmed news Morocco-Algeria borders

Hello, unconfirmed news tells me that the border between Morocco and Algeria would be open. Do you have any news? It seems very, very strange ...
Maybe it will have been the prayers of the Sicilians who have to go around the world to go to Morocco

Wishful thinking I fear. Nothing on the radar. Morocco and Algeria are still squabbling about Western Sahara and the African Union amongst other things.

Even if agreement was reached it would take weeks to renovate the border posts, install computer gear and so on.

It's a shame as the border is fairly arbitrary and there are families split and unable to (legally) visit each other by land.

Things are starting to move a little with WS, the Moroccans more assertive now that they are a member of the African Union, and their economic power is growing fast.
In Algeria Bouteflika is clinging to the power, hoping for yet another term. When the old guard is gone, things may change.

As far as the ordinary people are concerned they view each other as brothers and want the borders open. I was in Marrakech a few years back during the Morocco-Algeria football match in Marrakech and there was no trouble, lots of light-hearted fun, expressions of welcome to the Algerian fans.

Some tourists were huddled in their hotels expecting riots, don't know why, but I was in the middle of it. I really hope (going off topic) that Morocco wins the 2026 FIFA World Cup Bid.

Hope they do and the US don’t.

I was in Morocco when they qualified. Weirdest night I’ve seen. Town was deserted apart from the odd tourist and police until the match finished.

Then it was a giant party, much better behaved than the fans back home

There's talk of him standing for a fifth term in 2019 despite being in really poor health.

That's the thing about autocratic rulers—they are more interested in keeping power than doing good for their country. And when Bouteflika goes there's no guarantee the next guy will be any better.

With the 10th largest natural gas reserves in the world, Algeria should be a rich nation but the heavy regulation policies of its socialist government and state domination of commerce rather than allowing private industry to flourish keeps it on its knees.

The arguments with Morocco stem largely from disputes that were ultimately the fault of France's drawing of the borders between Algeria and Morocco. It's been going on since the sand war of the 1960s, so don't hold your breath about borders reopening.

The only bright spot on the horizon was a suggestion of a joint Tunisia/Algeria/Morocco hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. It's an awful long way off in the future, but could this be a chink to improving relations?

While I was also hoping for a joint Maghreb bid, Morocco is now turning to (and has talks with) Spain and Portugal for co-hosting the 2030 WC.

No talks at all in Morocco about an opening of borders with Algeria.
