Where to get insurance - Melilla / Beni Ensar Border

A couple of months ago I went to Morocco with some friends and people here were super helpful, answering my questions. So here is me giving back to the community.

If you happen to have an English registerd bike, you will very likely not be covered by your insurance in Morocco. Unlike most European Bikers.

Erroneously, some threads in this forum claim that you can get your bike insurance just after crossing the fence in Beni Ensar. As per April 2017, THAT IS NOT LONGER THE CASE for foreign vehicles. You will need to go to Nador, a 15 minute bike ride away or 5€ taxi ride.

You should look or ask for this address.

It will take around 35 to 40 minutes to the paperwork, lovely staff, Tea will be offered. It will cost around €90 or £70. And it's third party, it includes recover contact number.

Here is our experience getting off the ferry in Nador this morning and buying insurance in the port.

We got our D16ter filled out on the ferry (GNV from Sete, France) along with getting our passports stamped.

When we rode off the ferry, we asked one of the helper guys about getting insurance. He had us park then took off looking for the insurance woman. She took me in to the terminal building and unlocked the insurance office to sell me insurance. She wouldn't sell me two months, only one or three months. Cash only, euros or dirhams (the cash machine in the terminal wasn't working, so I spent down my euto stash), 250 euros each bike for three months of insurance.

This was all before we turned in the first third of the D16ter.

Now off for two months of exploring!!

Crazy rip-off money, someone is doing very well out of this.

I have one of my bikes on third party insurance in Spain which costs 148€ per annum and includes green card cover for Morocco for up to 90 days per trip, no limit on number of trips.

I see in the thread that insurance can be bought in Nabor but what is the situation from Ceuta? We are wanting to take a ferry from Spain to Ceuta and then on to Marrakesh on UK registered bikes, It was my understanding that the insurance can be bought at the boarder is this still the case?

In Ceuta there was an AXA? place out of the port down the road, but it was hit and miss, iirc.
Few prolong the hassle by going via Ceuta these days, so unless you have a good reason, go via Tan Med a few miles to the west.
Buy insurance from the cabin then out the port leads straight to the motorway for Marrakech.

Used to be a hassley border (a Dutch journalist mate just got deported from here), but got this message from a traveller:

Entering from Melilla to Nador now easy. Tell the Moroccon border guard you need a CIN. He let's you park just through the check point. Walk back to the booths and there is one with passport control written on. Get your blank CIN here, fill it out the same booth where it is processed. Then go to the booth next door and get your TVIP.

I switched to NFU who cover Morocco (but 3rd party only) and did my 80 Landcruiser for £230.

Just for the record:

1) I've entered Morocco twice now with my Canadian-registered motorcycle, each time at Tanger Med. It's very easy to get insurance there, the security people keep most of the touts away (a few still manage to hang around), and the insurance price at Tanger Med is the 'fixed price',

2) I rode into Melilla and back out again, just to see what Melilla was like, and that is one tough border crossing in either direction. The officials there have a difficult time with all the migrants from sub-Saharan Africa that they have to keep out, and it's a rough neighborhood. Totally unlike Tanger Med, which is a sterile area (in a positive sense) and the only visitors who arrive have already been pre-screened by the Spanish at the port and by the Moroccan immigration officer on the boat.

So, my advice to all: If you are going to Morocco from Europe, enter at Tanger Med.

Hi All,

After doing my research and trying my luck with the usual insurance companies (HIC, Norwich Union, Adrian Flux, Tourinsure) i'm now relying on the collective wisdom of the HUBB.

I'm riding from London to Sete and taking the ferry across to Nador (arriving on the 25th April), i'll be in Morocco for 13 days before heading back via Tangere.

So far the cheapest quote i've had for the BMW has been around £200 for third party only!

Can you still buy insurance at the border in Nador? Has anyone tried it recently?

Can any one recommend any other insurance companies? I tried my own insurer (MCE) but they're rubbish.

I've been reading Chris Scott's book and am really looking forward to my trip. I just have the insurance to sort out.

Any advise would be greatfully received.

NFU do green cards free if you have a policy with them.

If not buy at the border, its about 950dH for 30 days 3rd party if I remember correctly.

I don't have personal experience buying Moroccan insurance at Nador, but I was in Nador last month as part of a tour I did around Morocco.

I do remember a rather huge lineup of shops and booths at the border crossing from Nador into Morocco... it is a very busy border crossing (and not at all a friendly looking one, relative to Tanger Med). I think there is a very high probability that you will be able to buy Moroccan insurance at that border crossing, but I can't back that up with facts.

The Warden mentioned that insurance is about 950 DH for 30 days. I believe it is also possible to purchase a 14 day cover for about half the price. It's the same price for motorcycles or automobiles.

We have another discussion going on here concerning a Canadian who is shipping his motorcycle by air from Toronto to Casablanca, and his efforts to organize an insurance policy purchase in Casablanca ahead of time.

Have a look at that discussion, because it give you the name of the largest Moroccan insurance company that serves the tourist market, and it also has links to all their agents (hundreds of them) in the country. You might want to contact that company ahead of time and ask them to recommend you to an agent at or nearby the Nador border crossing.

Frontier insurance comes in 10 days, a month or 3 months and costs the same for bikes or cars.

For Europeans, no probs but afaik it has become near impossible for a UK motos to get a green card extension on their regular insurance, compared to a UK car, etc.
And even if you find a separate short-term insurance policy, I bet it will cost more than Morocco – like the £200 you got quoted.

Funnily enough I got a call back from MCE the other day. Given all the Brexit uncertainty they have just started to issue Green cards to customers travelling abroad.

They asked for the exact dates and a detailed itinerary. I guess i'll have to wait until it arrives in the post before i'll know whether it covers Morocco.

Otherwise, i'll take your advice and just buy insurance at the border.
