Customs in Morocco / GPS devices

Hi guys,

I´ve hear that mobile phones with GPS and GPS system must be declared when entering Morocco to avoid problems when leaving the country.
Has anyone experience with that? Where can I get the required documents?

Hi Christian:

I toured Morocco last year (entered on the ferry from Spain) - the customs folks were very professional and polite, they had no interest at all in my GPS, which was in plain view on my handlebars. So far as phones are concerned, everyone on the planet who is old enough to walk has one. Heck, I just came back from India, more people there have cell phones than access to toilets.

I even asked the Moroccan customs guy where I could get a local SIM card (this to avoid roaming charges), and he told me I could get one in any city that had a cell phone company office.

The only things that the Moroccan customs/immigration people were concerned about was as follows:

1) They scanned my passport and stamped me into the country (no different than Europe, USA, or Canada);

2) They gave me a document that noted that I had brought my motorcycle into the country, and reminded me to not lose it, because I had to surrender the document when I left Morocco to 'close the file' when I exported the same moto.

To complete this document, I had to show them the ownership (registration) of the motorcycle.

That was it - they didn't look at any of my possessions, didn't want to inspect anything at all. Heck, it was far easier and far more friendly than entering the USA.

I think that whatever information you may have read is out of date. There are a very small number of countries in the world that control satellite telephones such as Iridium or Globalstar or Thuraya equipment coming into their country, but Morocco is not one of them. Russia, Burma, & North Korea control satellite phones... those are the only countries I am aware of that do that.

What was interesting when I went through was that Moroccan customs looked in our books, I asked what for and they explained it was for subversive literature.

No interest at all in my navigation system or phone. Obviously I couldn't have had any subversive literature in the over 500GB of digital storage I had with me...

Same as all the other replys, I have had no issues when I arrived from Spain and left the same way.

There are no issues with GPS, phones, etc entering Morocco. Our sat nav unit is in clear view the n the dashboard together with our comms radios. Never been asked about them in twelve years.
I've also given lifts to several policemen over the years and they've shown no interest.

In Tunisia officially, GPS has to be declared but in practice no one was interested. On the one occasion I insisted they grumpily found a form relating to washing machines and other white goods and hastily completed it for the sat nav before sending us on our way.
