In our opinion, there are few, if any, completely uncontroversial countries/regions in the world. Whether it's Canada's treatment of our aboriginal inhabitants, the practices of colonial powers in Africa, South America or elsewhere, religious conflicts and present-day land grabs and disputes over resources, there are few - in fact almost certainly - no nationalities that are without sin and can cast the first stone.

We're a travel information site, not an opinion or political discussion site. We're also a global site, with visitors from 150+ countries and all major religions. That means there's bound to be someone with an opposing opinion on almost every political or religious topic.

To be clear, letting people know that there are riots in a city is useful information. Your analysis of the historical injustices behind the riots, and your opinion as to who is right and who is wrong, is not directly useful. Anyone travelling to a country can choose to immerse themselves in the historical and political situation there before going, and should certainly have at least a basic understanding of the potential issues there, if only to avoid provocation. We also encourage people to be sensitive to the situation of peoples in the countries they travel to and help when they can.

We have learned, often the hard way over the years that letting people voice opinions on politics or religion, however sincerely held, just results in bun fights, and hurt feelings and ultimately discourages people from participating and contributing useful information.

So, as has long been the standard here, political and religious discussion/arguments/fights are banned.
