Chris
Here is a short summary of the available maps of
Iceland. Generaly I would not recommend bikers to buy maps from Landmaelingar, but instead buy those from "Mál og Menning" (Edda publishing company). There is a very simple reason for this, there are more trails shown on the Mál og Menning maps.
*
Map of the Central Higlands. (
https://www.utivera.is/shopping/maps/)
Excellent
map for those who don't like the tarmac (since the higlands has none). This
map has the same roads and trails as the maps shown below, but there are gps coordinates on critical junctions. It is also very easy to plan your trip since you only have 1 sheet in front of you, instead of 4, or more.
* Quarternary travel maps (
http://www.randburg.is/is/maps/4maps.html)
Those maps cover the whole island on 4 sheets. Those maps show the same roads and trails as the
map of the Central Highlands, but you will not have GPS coordinates on critical junctions.
* Road Atlas (1:300 000) (
http://www.randburg.is/is/maps/miscelmaps.html)
Same database is used for those maps as the quarternary maps. This is a coil binding type of book. Each sheet shows small part of the island, so foreigners might find it difficult to use the book for planing purposes. Carry the road atlas on the road, since it is small and should fit perfectly in your tank-bag.
Hope this short summary helps you guys.
