Transalp overheating and stopping

Today my 2008 XL700V Transalp kept reaching 104 degrees and then the fuel pump would stop working until the bike cooled down. Riding through Arizona and it was 40 degrees celsius plus, so very hot. Bike continues to cut out as soon as the cooling fan comes on at 104 degrees. I have installed new water pump and fuel pump prior to leaving Australia for current trip.
Has anyone had this problem or have any idea what is going wrong. Would appreciate suggestions as we were about to head off to Mexico.

Strange that the fuel pump cuts out, does the fan try to start as the fuel pump cuts out? maybe a short or lack of volts stopping the fuel pump as the fan cuts in.

Did you have this issue prior to fitting new parts on the bike?

I would in this order: check coolant mix first - you could try some engine ice and I would flush the radiator out. Then look for fan issues - including a short or a seized fan, blocked or damaged fins, then look at the thermostat or temperature sensor, you need to figure out why the fuel pump is cutting out, so check volts across the battery as the engine overheats and the fan tries to cut in and see what is happening.

Thanks Grif, it seems everything in the cooling system is OK, it is working as it should. Have had the fuel pump relay checked and it is now down to the fuel pump seizing as it gets hot. Not sure how the bike reaching 104 degrees affects a pump in the tank. Anyway going to pull out the pump and find a replacement for it.

Hi Simon, yep, the fuel is used to cool the in tank pump, but even so its an unusual one for it to cut out at that specific temperature, glad you have figured it out, enjoy Mexico!
