Kachkar (Kackar) Mountains, NE Turkey

This year I'll be heading east through northern Turkey, along the Black Sea coast into Georgia.

I will not have a huge amount of time, but I wuld love to see some nice scenery in the Kachkars. I am driving a 4x4 so roads and access are not a problem, though with little time I cannot manage any multi-day treks. Can anyone recommend a route which will give the best views, and maybe the chance to do a day-walk somewhere to get a good dlimpse of the highest peaks? I'll be there in late May, so I expect there to still be a good bit of snowcover, should be beautiful!

Any suggestions very welcome,

EO

We are poking around just inland of Kackar Dagi - parked at Tortum Golu (Lake) for a couple of days until it stops raining.

Still some snow on the peaks and the terrain is incredibly rugged.
Lots of dam building in the area around Artvin and south and east, but in most cases the access is improved because of all the new roads.

My fairly large scale map shows a road crossing that area from Ardesen to Yuseleh - just a track in the central area - that goes pretty close to the highest mountain - Yaylalar is the village, but no idea if there is foot access from there.

Have fun!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
