Switzerland and Exhausts....

Hi All,

This has likely been covered till to death but I'm hoping for some recent updates if possible from those who've been there recently.

I have a F650GSD with a Leo Vince exhaust (baffle in and E-Marked) - I feel I've become too used to it's bark so don't notice it anymore... has anyone entered Switzerland on a single with a pipe and had issues? I hear horror stories (and I stress - more than a dozen) about people with E/ECE Marked exhausts being allowed in through the border and then stung by the local constabulary!!!

Hoping to attend the HUBB meet there later this month but, as I' don't have the original exhaust, can't switch back... I'd rather not impinge on the locals with a "shouty" exhaust and land a 400 Euro fine!!! - it could be a trip-killer

Any help, reassurances, recent visits available?

Rich

Well that seems fair to me: you're annoying everybody with your loud muffler and you get fined.

Look, I don't know how loud you are, but you're asking so you're probably very loud (otherwise stop being paranoiac and travel in peace my friend).

Some times there are bikers that are so f*cking loud that I sh!t in my pants, going into panic in my helmet and believing that a jet is crashing nearby - meanwhile that's just an egocentric assh*le "I'm soo cool on my bike, look at me everybody!"

Now something constructive: get a stock muffler, you should find one for a few quids on the second hand market. It's that easy.

Hello
As a local I can tell you, IF your pipes are too loud, please don't come.
IF they are whithin legal limits, you're very welcome.
Don't worry about the police, just respect the locals along the road.

Thanks for the replies... more or less what I was expecting.

As I said, I do not want to impose on anyone or cause any issues for people when in country.

I'm now on the hunt for a standard system

Out of interest, I have the ability to test the exhaust dB-wise - I cannot find the method the Swiss use. Does anyone know what it is? (I.e. 50cm at a 45deg angle from the outlet?)

Thanks all,

Rich

Thanks for looking for a less noisy exhaust. There are already plenty of road closures in Central Europe. We don't need more!

For Germany see here:

Biker Union e.V. - road control - IndexMap Blockings

In most cases these roads have been closed because of local people being permanently stressed by too loud motorcycles. Take into consideration that the population density is much higher in many Central European countries than in Scandinavia or Spain or maybe the UK. There are some popular motorcycle routes which see 1000 bikes a nice sunny day - now imagine if only 10% of those are annoyingly loud!

Switzerland is know for some quite heavy traffic fines and a no-mercy politics towards foreigners regarding fines. So my advice would be to get a standard OEM exhaust system, something you will probably find for small money in the internet, sold by people who "upgrade" to something louder!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
