Turkey Insurance from Bulgatia

Hi guys. We’re Brits taking a couple of bikes into Turkey at the end of the month. We’ve got the visa sorted but need to check the process for insurance, I read that there are many scam policies being sold for 100 Euro but does anybody have recent experience on where, from whom, and when to buy it? Much appreciated. Tom

Hi Tom:

I don't have recent experience, but about 4 years ago, I rode into Turkey from Bulgaria with my Canadian-plated ST1100.

Insurance was available for purchase at the border crossing station, in the same building as customs & immigration. Pretty much impossible for it to be a scam. If I recall correctly, it was not particularly expensive.

The various officials (customs, immigration, insurance) were very polite and helpful, but also very thorough and meticulous in their work. So, make sure that all of your paperwork is in order, and plan on spending about 45 minutes at the border to look after all the details.

In 2015 I bought insurance at the Kapikule border. It wasn't cheap, probably not much less than €100 (this is for a 4x4).

Not sure what counts as a scam in your opinion, but they are legitimate insurance brokers in the border complex who give proper documentation. What the policy is actually worth (the small print is in Turkish of course) I have no idea... I feel like insurance in general is often a scam.

Insurance

Many thanks for your replies. So it appears we shouldn’t have too many issues getting cover but what the covers worth is another question!

Tom:

The price for insurance for a moto is considerably less than the price of insurance for a vehicle.

It covers mandatory 3rd party traffic insurance. If you don't have it you will be liable for a fine well in excess of the cost of the insurance if stopped by the police at one of their many roadside checkpoints.

Cheers,

Dicky
