Roman, I experimented with several different setups on both 80 and 100 series Landcruisers, both were 4.5 litre petrol manuals.
The aftermarket standard snorkel ram head was the best for economy, not the best option for dust exclusion
Tried a Donaldson precleaner head and the extra restriction/swirling of air definately added noticeably to fuel consumption
Tried a washable foam air filter and this had the same effect as the Donaldson head. The compromise solution was to refit the standard snorkel ram head. In most situations this was more than sufficient and a step up from no snorkel at all. No additional fuel consumption was evident. This was far from a scientific test, but the differences were certainly noticeable enough.
