Moto travel with a big dog pillion

This goes out to all you who might have a giggle at the idea of moto travel with a big dog as pillion:

So, my wife, Jess, and I moved south to Guatemala a couple years ago on our motos (G650GS and F700GS, respectively) and a few months later we adopted a German Shepherd puppy. It was great but we also fretted that the pup would seriously curtail our two-wheeled travels. So, we set ourselves to figuring a way to bring GSD Moxie along on Jess's G650GS.

There are some creative DIY and commercial solutions out there but most – like the clever Pillion Pooch – are not intended for such a big dog (> 60-70 lbs). So we set to work with a local welder and, after several versions, we came up with a lightweight travel carrier built of tubular bars (like the bars of a hard pannier rack) enclosed with foam padding.

We've done several short trips in Guatemala and Mexico, including off-road, water-crossings, and even several crashes with really great results and a whole lotta fun!

If you'd like a bit of information about the carrier, we've published an 'about the K9 Moto Cockpit' video. We've also started a moto travel video series told from German Shepherd Moxie's perspective called on 2 Wheels + 4 Paws (think: Motorcycle Diaries meets A Dog's Purpose).

Hope this gives you a giggle and love to hear any comments or questions you might have!

Giggles?
Seriously?
I am shocked and find nothing to 'giggle' about.
IMHO, you are both unfit to own a dog and I can only pray that you find an alternative solution for the sake of your dogs’ well being before it gets hurt.

You should have thought about that before taking on responsibility for a life.

As humans we are free to make our choices and live with the consequences but a dog is a pack animal and you are its Alpha- it cannot reason any further and has no choice. To deliberately place an animal under your care in harm’s way for your selfish pleasure is nothing short of despicable. Unlike you, your dog does not wear any armour...

The terror your dog must have experienced each time seems to be a source of amusement to you and that speaks volume about what kind of people you are...

Easy on there!

If the dog did not want to travel ..it would not.

Having said that .. I believe it is now illegal to do that in some jurisdictions. Not something I have ever wanted to do so I don't follow it.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
