Exclamation The Man-Up Moto Challenge

Hi all,

My name's Rich, I'm an Australian (for my sins) about to turn 30, just broke up with my girlfriend so I've decided I'm going to buy a motorbike in Cape Town and ride it up through Africa to Berlin where I've been living the last 2 years. I've decided to call it the Man-Up Moto Challenge because it's time I man up and see what I'm truly capable of now that I'm gonna be joining the 30's club!
I'm ready.

But I've run into a few complications that I hope you might have some insight on...
One, I don't actually have an Australian Motorbike Licence. I have a drivers licence, but only my motorbike Learners, which is not transferrable to South Africa. So I need to get my motorbike licence here.
Do you know the process to get a drivers licence as a foreigner in SA?

I understand I have to get the Traffic Register Number first, but can't seem to get an answer as to whether I can get one on a visitors visa. I'm going to the Civic Centre tomorrow to find out, but they've not been very helpful so far.

The other thing is insurance. Do any of you have advice on multi-national insurance providers that can cover me across the continent?

Then once this is all sorted I can get started on the fun bit: buying a motorbike. More to come on that later, but if you have any help for me on the above for now I would greatly appreciate it!

I will actually be filming and documenting my whole trip so you'll be able to follow me as I 'Man Up'. Please connect if you have any experiences, ideas or suggestions regarding a travel vlog.

Best,

Rich Jay

Don't know anything about the drivers license question but two friends got the TRN on visitors visas in January this year in Cape Town (Johannesburg insisted on residency). Search the site and you'll find some more details

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
