Copper canyon Mexico

Hi. We are travelling on a bmw1200 adventure with road tyres. I know that it is a paved road from Creel to Batopilas in Copper Canyon , does anyone know what the road is like from Batopilas to El Fuerte? And is it safe at the moment? We are travelling two up fully loaded.

The road to El Fuerte is very challenging, a lot of stones and and very steep.
All depends on the weather, if You get a rain the road from the Rio el Fuerte is very splippery too.
Security, well after the 6-7PM you will be overtaken by a few black 4x4 in Sinaloa. I did it on the road tires

Just came through from Batopilas to El fierte.... We were riding solo on Ktm 950, bmw 800, klr 650. Not a road for a 2up loaded beamer. Im on fully laden 950, it was a chore at times. If you happen to attempt it, make sure you take the correct route from Batopilas, there is the high road (correct route), and the low road through Jesus Maria. We did low road... best left for the livestock.

I did it a few weeks ago on a KLR650. Could do it on a GSA no problem, if you are skilled enough and it's DRY. Would not recommend it 2 up unless you are on a pro level.

Rode through Tubares and Choix. A river crossing that was a bit risky, because it was raining a couple of days ago and I didn't want to wait any longer. From Batopilas up and down to El Rodeo would be a workout, but manageable. The road to Tubares would be challenging, especially after you pass San Ignacio (on the other side of the river, you don't go through) till Tubares all in all 30-45mins. From then on it's pretty decent gravel till Choix.

There is a different way, longer, with a bridge, so no river crossings. It goes through San Ignacio and then through a labirinth of roads. No signs of course, so spanish is essential. Scenery is great, but the road is rougher.

Two up will be a challenge if you take the new road between Bato and Urique





Urique to Tubares / Choix should not be too bad.

Pictures dont do it justice. I the steeper parts, the ground is a mix of loose rocks and flour dust.

If you meet a Harley bagger on the high road between Batopilas and Urique, take a photo because we wont believe you.

The bagger line is not far off except for the cement crossing just out of Batopilas tward Urique that we had to get a truck to ferry us across because of the swift current and 6 foot drop over the edge and the steeeeeep hair pin turns on loose rock with a magnificent view over the cliff edges , the odd jump and of course the river crossing that washed out a 100 foot bridge a few years back. Oh ya I forgot the mud. Pick and choose your bagger experience wisely. I was on a 650 vstrom loaded for travel . 5 ft8 inches 160 lbs. To do it again I would take my drz 400s. It was a total fun fest for sure.
