Sugru + Lego = ultimate quick mount for anything

I saw a video of someone making a snap button holder for a kitchen towel - using two pieces of legos (2x2 plates) and sugru. It got me thinking of the many applications this could potentially have for bikers.

Say you want to make a quick on/off mount for:
  • Holding your gas cap to your bike while refilling - to prevent it falling to the ground
  • A pice of clothing or adjustmen strap - which is either to be attached to itself or another item... using legos in place of velcro or a snap button (sugru is flexible and adheres to fabric).
  • Holding your phone or GPS frimly in place, for instance inside your map pocket or on your tank
  • An action camera tripod mount, helmet mount, bike mount...
  • A "hide-a-key" or "secret stash" or "hidden credit card"
  • As a lanier mount
  • To hold your gloves while refilling
  • To hold items firmly in place in your panniers - to keep them from rattling or keeping liquid containers upright to prevent spilling
  • Sunglass case
  • Helmet light
  • Holder for your camelbak drinking tube
  • Goggles - i.e. to hold them on your helmet when you have to pull them off your face while stopping to refuel
  • To hold your microphone in place in your helmet, on your body, to the camera or on your bike
  • Cup holder
  • To hold your flashlight inside your tent
  • To hold loose ends of straps
  • Supplement attachment points for luggage

Simply attach a lego (i.e. a 2x2 plate) with sugru or glue to each of the items you need to stick together. The greater the forces that it will need to resist (i.e. gravity/weight, vind or vibrations), the larger the lego surface should be. In some applications, using the ultra thin legoand more flexible lego pieces may be a better option.

Now, I have never really tried this in real life. I would be concerned about the reliability and durability for some applications. I would for instance be concerned about the glue/legos coming undone through long time use, or the pieces of legos becoming worn, etc. I would be hesitant to use it as a phone mount, or as a helmet mount for my action cam.

Other sugru fastener combos:
  • Magnets (solid and flexible) and metal plates
  • Patent band
  • Go-pro mounts
  • Snap buttons
  • Regular buttons
  • Buckles
  • Carabiners
  • Lanier
  • Velcro
  • Reuseable zip ties
  • Nuts, bolts, wingnuts...

Maybe carrying an assortment of these fastener items and sugru is a good idea? Then you would be prepped and ready to hack a ton of inconveniences and needs as they reveal themselves on your trips.

Need ideas for lego hacking?

https://hackaday.com/tag/lego/

I learned from my nephews there are other much cheaper manufacturers of system bricks than Lego:

Xingbao, Cada, Cobi, QBricks, Bluebrixx, Modbrix, Qman.

But all have one in common:
It´s difficult to buy single bricks instead of full kits.

There's a pack of Sugru in my workshed at the moment just waiting for me to find a use for it. Mostly it seems to be a solution in search of a problem.

I've also got a jar of some kind of white mouldable thermoplastic pellets (there is a trade name for them but as I've lost the original box I can't remember it) that must have a bike use. At least I managed to use them to mould a dimmer switch part on an expensive lamp in our flat. Lasted three years so far so I'm very happy.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
