And again : R80GS or R100GS ? (read on!)

Having the luxury of being able to choose between an R80GS (1991) and an R100GS(1993), I would like to know more about their differences from a technical point of view and from a "driving experience" pov.

I searched the BB but couldn't topics comparing those two.

They're essentially the same bike.

(The R80G/S is a totally different beast)

Frame, suspension etc all same.

The ONLY real difference - in fact depending on exactly which R80GS (there were a couple of versions) - they may be IDENTICAL - is carbs, heads, barrels and pistons.

If it's the R80GS Kalahari, usually spotted by the blue frame, it's a little lighter and simpler, sort of a G/S, but there's not a lot of difference to the R100 still.

The difference bewtween the R100GS and the R80GS boils down to the R80 is smoother running (less vibration) and more pleasant to ride, but the R100 has more power. Fuel mileage is similar, and totally dependent on how you ride it. At speed the R100 can be better than the R80, but at lower speeds the R80 is usually better.

And that's about it.

But wasn't the R100GS provided with an oilcooler on some vulnerable place? I thought I head read it was mounted on the crashbars, but I can't seem to find a picture of it.


It wasn't the Kalahari. It are just plain GSses. The 80GS has 40.000 kms more then the 100GS.

R100GS did have an oil cooler on the crashbars, some 80GS's did too.

if they are the European verions, which they probably are, the technical difference is 32/40 mm carbs, 800/1000 cc, 50/60 hp, oil cooler only on 100GS. Not necessary for 80GS. Gear ratio 3.20/1: R80 and 3,09/1: R100. Fuel consumption is 1 litre/100km lower for 80 GS. Top speed 10 k's less for 80GS. Frame, suspension, brakes, tyres all identical.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
