Cardan Ventilaton

I was reading in a German magazine, that on the R 1200 GS/A LC it can suck water in the cardan housing if you go through deep water. The oil and the housing is warm and it would cool of in deep water and so create a vacuum and suck water in through the pressure exchange valve.
And sure enough, at Touratech you can buy a bit of hose (for NZ$ 109.25) that would solve the problem.
My last bike was a R 1200 GS 2009. I had it in deep water and mud holes and never have I had any water in the oil of the finale drive.
I can not believe, that this would be a problem after so many generations of GS's.
What do you think?

Has anybody ever had water in the cardan oil?

I've done quite a lot of fording with the water level over the FD box and haven't seen "white coffee" emulsion in my FD oil so far.

Yet I have some UK friends who speciefically find the most and the deepest fords they can find for crossing and they occasionally have emulsion in their FDs.

I think it takes quite extreme fording to acheive this, or being stalled dead for minutes in the water, or complete fallover in the water, then it slowly water pours into the FD box when exposed for a very long time that deep. At least the vent opening on my 1100GS FD is very small and for the extreme need I could tape it closed I suppose.

Hence for normal travellers or riders I don't see the point adding that hosed long vent with extra weight, bulk and complications. I guess it's useful only for those fanatical specialist "fording" people in practice.

Just me 2c.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
