Buying/selling bike in South America

I'm looking to buy an American plated bike in SA so I can do title/registration in the US, then fly down with plates. Is there a country in SA that doesn't have a TIP? Or is there a way to do the transfer, then ride the bike out without border hassles? Thanks

No, South America. Asking about any country on the continent.

Brazil doesn't have TIP, I believe Argentina you can get an 8 month one. But as long as the original owner makes you a "PODER" before he leaves and gets it apostilled at a ministry of foreign affairs you won't have border hassle in any country anyway. (PODER is power of attorney to ride the bike and cross borders with it)

I don't have recent experience in Brazil, so I can only report that when I entered and left several times 6 or 8 years ago I needed a TIP each time. And I've read reports that the absence of TIPs was just a temporary thing for the World Cup. If I were thinking of buying a foreign bike there, I'd have to wonder: is the seller telling the truth about having entered without a TIP? What happens if I try to leave the country and it turns out it actually did enter on a TIP, and perhaps remained illegally?

This might serve as an object lesson in why it's not a good idea to take information you read on the internet as if once and forever true. In general, Brazil seemed to take great pleasure in permanently confiscating vehicles for customs infractions. Caveat emptor.

Hope that's helpful.

Mark

I entered Brasil Sept 2017 at Foz de Iguazu and again in January 2018 at Chuy - and both times got a TIP. And the guys were very serious and explained what this meaned and that I had to leave within those 90 days on the TIP.

I have a US registered 2012 DR650 in my name, fully kitted out and adventure ready. I went through the process of changing registration to my name with the previous owner. I also have a Spanish PODER template ready to go.

I will finish my trip in (probably) Santiago at the end of March, PM me if interested.

Still looking for a bike?

Hi Greg! Are you still looking for a bike?
We have one for sale in Peru with Colombian license plates, which can be registered directly to your name and make border crossings easy. Let me know if you want more info.
