Darwin shipping and storage

Hi All.
I expect to be in Darwin by late June/early July and will want to ship my bike across to Indonesia. So, here are the questions for which I need answers.

Is it still best to ship to Dili or is there a route which goes direct to the eastern end of Indonesia?
If Dili is best, is ANL the best option?
I understand that crating the bike is usually cheaper than RoRo. What are the best options for doing this?
Because I will be returning to the the UK while the bike is being shipped, will I be able to store the bike somewhere until it's due to go on the ship? Or store it in Dili? I believe the shipping will take about one week but I'll be separate from it for about three weeks. I'll email ANL about this too.

I came the other way late 2015 and can share some information.
ANL is the company - but I have seen somewhere on the www another option is exisiting, but I cannot remember where I saw it and what the company was called. But if you search well you might find it.

ANL send the bikes in containers and they dont crate them - they just tie them down with straps/tie-downs. You need to provide these yourself and of course they need to be of the stronger type. You might even be able to do so yourself to secure that the bike is securely fastened. I was allowed in Dili at least.

The ANL wessel goes Darwin - Dili - Singapore and then returnes to Darwin as far as I know. This means that is should be possible to ship the bike to Singapore. But then again I have read that getting a bike on the road in Singapore is both expensive and quite a hazzle.

I would strongly recommend to ship to Dili. The remoter islands of Flores, Sumbawa and Lombok and even Timor was really a great experience and the roads were ok to good (not allways in East Timor) and far far less crowded than Bali, Java and parts of Sumatra. The amount of vehicles on the road in Java, Bali etc is just insane! You will miss the more remoter islands for sure while struggling BIG TIME with traffic in the more central parts of Indo.

And Im sure theres a friendly guy that can help you with storing in Darwin. He will let you know....

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking now that Dili will be best, mostly for the reasons you state but also ease of shipping. There's an established infrastructure and methodology on that route, so why reinvent the wheel?
I've had a helpful reply from ANL so the mists are gradually clearing. I just need to know about storage now.

Hey Kentbiker,

I'm shipping my bike to Dili next month so can give you some up to date info.

The person to speak with is Alzira Lay-Leong at Bollore Logistics in Darwin. She is very helpful and great to deal with her contact details below.

I have been quoted $799aud to have a single bike shipped to Dili and $3,100 for a 20ft container which she has advised they can comfortably fit 5 bikes in, six if they are on the smaller side.

The boat leaves Darwin for Dili once every three weeks and takes two days to get there, however unloading can get held up that end as their port can only unload one ship at once.

Lastly, AANT no longer do the Carnet's in Darwin, they must be done through the Australian Automobile Association in Canberra, down load the forms, follow the instructions and away you go. They were great to deal with, no issues.

The price of the carnet is now fixed no matter the bike value, cost is $1,420aud.

Hi Josh. Tanks very much for all this info. It's likely to be very handy. I've been in touch with ANL who have provided me with some info too, although not a price quote. When I reach Darwin I'll contact both shippers to see which one suits my plans the best. It won't be just about price but also timing, convenience etc. But it's great to have options.
My carnet is sorted as it's been issued here in Europe.

Hi Dave.
Thanks for the info mate. I'll get in touch in a couple of months time, once I have my Indo visa securely in my back pocket. No firm plans will be made until then. My plan is to get to Darwin in June, investigate and make plans, then ride off to explore the region. I expect to be back in early July to then get the bike onto a boat.

Hi Andy,

Sorry for the delay..havnt been on here for a while.

I had to postpone my shipping date due to wrecking my bike and having to replace it. I was in contact with her again today and she indicated that the price would still be the same for the boat leaving 2nd May (Hopefully).

Obviously things can and do change so you will need to contact her and get a price your self.
