Anyone travelled to, around, from papua new guinea?

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has an idea if it's possible to get by boat/ferry from Australia to papua new guinea?
I read that it's only possible to fly in, but as there are a lot of mad travellers on this forum, just trying

Also wondering if anyone travelled to, from around papua new guinea?
Looking where we can go from papua new guinea, it looks like there aren't a lot of options?
We would love to see papua new guinea, indonesia, philipines and signapore and looking for a way to travel in between.
preferable the cheapest one

PNG is hard to travel around, roads tend to go from the coast a little way inland and then the terrain just stops any further road travel. Mining roads are generally off limits, in some places there are still road blocks with the locals demanding fees for driving over their land. General consensus is always travel with a local guide who can steer you away from trouble.


There are coastal boats - not ferries - its all ask and see who is going where and when. There is a smallish cruise boat that goes around, dropping off at various places - expensive by all accounts. From Cairns I think.


Friends have used a yacht and had a ball, but they were experienced sailors with navigation and weather. They had a crew of 8 and needed 2 on watch at all times even when moored a few kms offshore.

In our enthousiasme during planning the rest of our trip (just travelled 2 years in Africa), we didn't really look up how 'travellable' PPNG is, apparently, not very much...

I've been to PNG several times, always for work-related reasons.

The country is not well developed. There are considerable problems with violent crime in urban areas. Personally, I suggest you avoid the place.

Having said that, the local people really like foreign motorcyclists... served with a little bit of mayonnaise on the side.

Two acquaintances of mine have worked there, on the ground out in the sticks.
One in construction and another in medical aid.

They have reported to me similar sentiments to the other posts in here; tribalism is the rule, so it is much like the Scottish-English border of a few hundred years ago in that case.

Unlike the much-publicised issues in Africa and such areas as the Middle East, PNG is not sexy enough for the media, although Australia takes an interest of course.
