I'm in the process of buying one and can't settle of imported prado or the d4d which is quite rare in the used market - the trip will be long around Africa back to europe and am concerned about the fuel economy. Am even thinking of getting an X-trail to save on the fuel.
So please let me know if you still remember

I have owned both a Prado 95 and an X Trail, one after the other - nowadays I drive a 2WD van with a motorbike carried in the back.
The Prado returned 26 MPG (UK gallons) and hardly varied from that figure no matter how I drove it.
The 2003 model X trail returned about 42 MPG.
Both of these figures based on driving on asphalt.
At the time I owned them there were discussion threads in the 4 wheeler section of the HUBB. The latter has changed a lot since then, but it's own search engine can recover those discussions, such as the one shown in the link below.

Come to think of it, one of the reasons I changed the Prado for the X trail was the stupid insurance situation for the imported-into-the-UK Prado which is no different to the home model Colorado, apart from the badge.
