Hi all,
I’ve been thinking about overlanding with 4x4 for a few years. We saw some rigs on the net when we were planning our 3 month trip to NZ and Oz. But we realized that the time would be to short to do an extensive crossing through the Outback and also see the highlights Australia and New Zealand had to offer.
Last year we saw heaps of the Grey Nomads in WA traveling with their big Landcruisers and the likes and towing a big off-road caravan-trailer. Makes a lot of sense in Oz, however not so much in Eurasia if you would be exploring in the colder regions from time to time.
So we are intrigued by them beautiful overlandcampers but got a challenge; we both have a motorcycle license and when we finally take the step to travel and see the rest of the world would love to take along two motorcycles for exploring the region and leave the big truck at the base.
You see a lot of campers with spare tires and a motorcycle at the back of the camper, but very rarely two motorcycles. The ones you do see are way over the 7500 kg limit. Also our budget isn’t limitless so we are looking for a sensible solution.
I got my eyes on a build from
www.4wheel24.de based on a Iveco 90-16 with the creature comforts in the shelter for extensive traveling. However putting two motorcycles at the back seems a too big of a challenge. The idea came to me of towing a trailer which could haul our two bikes (and more stuff like diving equipment & compressor). Saw a possible solution with
www.Campwerk.de (cargo trailer with off-road capability). At least if the difference in height can be overcome.
However... is this a workable, smart, sensible, safe, etc. solution in real life? If you stick to the main roads the combination could cross the distance, on location the bikes can be used to explore in the villages or rougher terrain. But would the additional costs in regard to the length of the combination on e.g. toll-bridges or boats be to high OR the possible theft of the trailer be a to likely scenario (maybe ideas how to prevent this).
Anyway.. question is; does anyone know people who travel with a combination as mentioned or are themselves experienced in traveling in Europe and Asia with a trailer?
Thanks for the help and feedback. Happy travels to you all!
