What is it?

Horizons Unlimited Mountain Madness (HUMM) is an off-road, competitive, motorcycle navigation challenge for teams of 2-4 bikes. For 2018, we plan events in the USA Granite Mountain in Arizona, the Canadian Monashees in British Columbia and the Appalachians in West Virginia. Events are 2 full-days of riding, and the most fun you can have on two wheels ;-)

"The best day's riding ever!"
"Ranks among the top ten 'best fun' biking experiences!"
"The best 48 hours of my life! (apologies to wife!)

Riders into woods. Photo by Nick Zacker.

Choose one of FOUR challenge classes for your team to participate!

  1. MAP SINGLES - Single-cylinder bikes navigating with a compass (no GPS);
  2. MAP MULTIS: Multi-cylinder bikes navigating with a compass (no GPS);
  3. GPS SINGLES: Single-cylinder bikes navigating with a GPS or satnav;
  4. GPS MULTIS: Multi-cylinder bikes navigating with a GPS or satnav.

Does your team have a combination of singles and multis? Choose the ONE challenge class your team will ride in and experience the unique pros and cons of each bike type.

Rocks galore at HUMM Appalachians!

Bikes need not be dedicated off-road specials but need to have a vague predilection for the dirt. So GS Adventure yes, Electric Glide in Blue, no. Knobbly tires a plus but by no means essential.

HUMM Appalachians - Riders coming over hill.

Each team gets the same map and a checkpoint booklet on Day 1. Each checkpoint gets its own page with a clear description of its location and a map reference. Crucially, the booklet is not a roadbook. No two teams ever take the same routes, there is no course as such. So you're never following a string of riders down the same dusty course!

Sign up for either 1 day or 2 days of training with Zacker Adventures at a special low price of $150 per day! Training takes place from 08:00 – 17:00 each day.

It's time to regain your riding legs. Maybe you've been brushing up on your map-and-compass skills, or indulged in some (friendly!) trash-talking with other teams, or recently got introduced to new team members. Getting excited?

Now, what if you could get an extra confidence boost by taking one or two days of off-road skills training just before doing the HUMM? Todd Zacker, of Zacker Adventures, is leading rider training. Put freshly-honed skills into immediate practice during the HUMM!

Zacker Adventures is an adventure motorcycle riding and training school, and the Event Partners for HUMM Appalachians 2017.

Who are these guys?

Zacker Adventures is an adventure motorcycle riding and training school for riders interested in improving their technique and skills.

"Our mission is to bring value to the ADV motorcycle community through knowledge, experience and instruction and to build a community of the 5% who use their bike for it's intended purpose and introduce the opportunity to at least 5% more."

Zacker Adventures is headed by Todd Zacker, who is an accomplished rider with 35+ years of off-road experience and 27+ years of on-road experience. He's raced AMA Pro Motocross and Supercross, AMA Pro Superbike and Supersport, and IJSBA Modified. Todd Zacker has instructed for Motorcycle Safety classes, Motocross Racing, Motorcycle Roadracing, and is First Aid CPR/AED certified.

Todd Zacker of Zacker Adventures.

Nick Zacker, the mastermind-to-be, is a young rider with many different styles of riding under his belt. He has 12 years of off-road experience riding an 85cc two stroke all the way to a 450cc four stroke. He made his transition to road at the age of 16 riding older sport bikes and getting right into big adventure bikes. He uses his skills learned from Todd over the years to control his big bike like someone who has been riding for 25-30 years.

Nick Zacker of Zacker Adventures.

What's covered?

Sep 13 - LEVEL 1: Slow-speed maneuvers. Key fundamentals for newer off-road riders and excellent tips for more experienced riders, and prepares all riders for the more advanced skills in Level 2.

Sep 14 - LEVEL 2: Intermediate-to-advanced maneuvers. For intermediate and advanced riders, and for those who took Level 1 training on Sep 13th.

Class size is very limited to provide a high level of attention to each rider. This ensures a better training experience for all! Registration closes when we're full. For changes, please reply to your confirmation email. These classes do sell out quickly, so please reserve your spot early.

MANDATORY RIDING GEAR IS REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION. You'll receive more info about required gear after registration and well before the day, but assume good protective gear, and the bike must be road-legal and insured. For changes, please reply to your confirmation email.

Press and potential sponsors, please contact us here.

Rules of the HUMM:

  1. You must ride in a team of 2, to a maximum of 4 people, (minimum 2 bikes) so be sure to put together your team before registering as we need the names of all team members. If you cannot find someone to team with, go ahead and register for the event, note that you do not have a team partner, and we will match you with someone with a similar bike and riding skill level as best we can. Several past winners were matched up by us!
  2. Team Wilderness Wheels at HUMM Morocco 2015.

  3. Prizes will be awarded in 4 classes (subject to sufficient entrants):
    • Map Class
      • Singles
      • Multis
    • GPS Class
      • Singles
      • Multis

Mixed off-road teams have the good and bad of each class to deal with, so can choose which class to be in.

  4. Two-up teams are ok, but there must be another vehicle in your team. We don't want solo bikes out alone.
  5. Team mates must ride together at all times! If you separate for any reason other than one bike is broken down and stopped or one rider is injured, and the other rider is going for help, you will be disqualified.
  6. No GPS allowed in the Map Class! You will be given a set of Event Map(s) and an Event Points Book. You may carry a smartphone, but are NOT allowed to use the GPS function. You may carry a GPS with map data of the area for emergency use only. It will be sealed in a tamper-proof plastic bag before you check out to ride. If the bag is opened for non-emergency purposes before returning to HUMM base, your team is disqualified. No other paper or digital map(s) of the event area other than those provided by HUMM organizers. Except for your GPS device (for emergency only), no laptops, tablets, or other digital devices that are capable of storing other map information.
  7. Special Rules for GPS Class! GPS or smart phones with GPS capabilities are allowed in this class, but we aren't supplying GPX co-ordinates, since we don't want it to be too easy. ;-) As with the MAP class, you will be given a set of Event Map(s) and an Event Points Book. No other paper or digital map(s) of the event area other than:
    a) paper maps provided by HUMM organizers, and
    b) electronic maps already loaded onto your GPS or GPS-enabled smartphone. No laptops, tablets, or similar devices.
  8. Start / Finish Time: 08:30-17:30 every day. You must check out and check in. Late returns lose points - really late returns lose lots of points! All team members must return together.
  9. Each checkpoint has a points value based on how far it is from the hotel combined with the degree of difficulty. The HUMM is all about spending several days navigating your way around the mountains and seeing as much great scenery as possible.
  10. Obtaining checkpoint info from another team is grounds for disqualification. In the event of a dispute or challenge, a photo at a checkpoint that matches the photo in the HUMM book will be required to verify the team has been to the checkpoint.

Articles about the HUMM

ADVMOTO 2017 Event Report by Jim Cowgill and Lukas Eddy

HUMM Appalachians article in ADVMoto Magazine.

"The diversity of bikes was refreshing, from two-up riders on a big KTM, to a barely legal two-stroke and everything in between - riders of all kinds showed up for the fun. There's actually no 'best' bike for this event, because the varied terrain lets riders experience the merits and drawbacks of whatever equipment they have. Regardless of your skill or ride, anyone can have fun competing in a HUMM!"

ADVMoto, March/April 2018 issue is on the newstands now! Read the HUMM article here.

Motorcycle Mojo review of HUMM Rockies, by Emily Roberts

Motorcycle Mojo June 2017 article on HUMM Rockies.

"Horizons Unlimited Mountain Madness (HUMM) is geared toward the regular motorcyclist wanting to challenge his or her navigational and riding skills. The challenge features different classifications for riders based on single- and multi-cylinder engines, and GPS or map and compass categories.

Extreme scenery and challenging riding make this competition a must for any experienced trail rider.

Overall, this event was absolutely incredible and well organized. A large variety of rider groups and skill levels had participated. We saw everything from XT250s from the '80s to brand-new 1190 Adventures and even a Moto Guzzi Stelvio. Some riders were competitive, while others were there just for the experience."

Motorcycle Mojo June 2017 issue can be purchased from the magazine here. Read the HUMM article here.
