Since 2014, more than 80 volunteer adventure riders have traveled tens of thousands of rugged kilometers across Mongolia, Nepal, Peru, Patagonia, and Bhutan in order to provide new motorcycles to park rangers to combat poaching and protect natural and cultural world heritage. More than 160 new bikes have been donated to date through this effort.

John ButtonColombia, COVID... What Could Go Wrong? |
Colombia is the best country in South America for motorcyclists. I have planned for years to ride there. During the COVID lock down, there were few places outside the USA open to visitors. Colombia was among the few. My wife and I took advantage to ride the country for about two weeks in January of 2021. Come join me to hear about our challenges and fun, and learn ideas to prepare for your ride in Colombia. Spoiler alert, it really is the best country to ride in South America!
JOHN BUTTON is a life-long rider since the age of eight, enjoying both on and off-road. Having ridden to every U.S. state and ten Canadian provinces, he's seen a lot of North America. Visiting other countries is his focus now, which, so far, has included Canada, Australia, Colombia, and Mexico. Living so close has enabled 30-plus trips to Mexico, mostly focused on the Baja peninsula.

Chase EckertAlaska: The Top of the World / |
Also check out Chase's workshop session: A PROFESSIONAL TAKE ON BIKE MAINTENANCE. See details in the Workshops and Tech Sessions section below.
1) Alaska: The Top of the World
The AlCan, the interior of Alaska, and what travel in the north looks like
There are different paths to the same destination. This presentation lets you know what to expect on the road up to the north, what's along the way and what you paid for once you get there. Most people only get to experience one way up and one way back; here's the skinny on the many routes and means of conveyance once you reach the Great Land. Weather, road conditions, terrain, packing, service, wildlife; all of these will be broken down so you understand the risks and rewards of running the AlCan, Cassiar, Denali, and Dempster Highways as well the excitement that is to be had on the Alaskan mainland including the the Alaska Marine Highway.
2) No Such Thing as Cold Weather
Just bad clothing. Dressing for the cold on a bike also means packing for the cold
Being prepared for cold weather on a bike is unique; you have no relief and you're completely exposed all of the time. Cold weather can not only be tolerated but also enjoyed by mixing technique and equipment. This presentation explores what it takes to extend your riding season and thrive when other people pack it up for the winter. Not only can you have a great time in the off season, but you can safely and comfortably enjoy cold spots and high elevation almost all year.
CHASE ECKERT was born and raised in Alaska. He is a professional mechanical inspector who has had the opportunity to work and travel by motorcycle. Chase is an expert on Alaska and the AlCan highway, having driven it over a dozen times.

Marina GrayCosta Rica on Two Wheels |
There are so many fun fly-and-ride destinations, with Costa Rica definitely ranking high on that list. Renting a bike and hitting the road is easy, trying to fit all the fun into a few days is the hard part. Join me as we ride through the cloud forests, small towns, country roads, lush mountain ridges, numerous rivers and of course, beautiful empty beaches. I will go over the logistics, some things I would do differently, and touch upon the most memorable spots we managed to explore - and others that remain on my to-do list.
MARINA GRAY is an avid traveller who tries to continuously expand how and where she goes. She traveled extensively through eastern Canada and western United States on various motorcycles over the years. Although she prefers small dual sports, she is always on the lookout for the next unique opportunity that may or may not include riding, from scuba diving in Cabo, to flying small aircraft over Zion, to traversing 100 km of remote Arctic moraines on foot.

Alex GrayDeath Valley - Winter Paradise |
With Nevada BDR and California BDR so close to one another, one can hop from one route to the other, enjoying the best of both. We thought it was going to be an easy and pleasant ride. With much of Death Valley National Park closed due to damage from Hurricane Kay, we tried to find new ways to bridge the BDRs. Mountain passes, wide open dry lakes, ghost towns and brothels - quintessential remnants of the Wild West.
Everything was going so well until we attempted to cross the Inyo Mountains on the less travelled roads. It was fun for a bit to see snow and ice on our path, but quickly turned into a serious workout just to stay the right side up. It's everything you want in a motorcycle adventure! What better place to be at dusk in November than 9,000 ft above sea level on a snowed in pass?
ALEX GRAY is addicted to travelling. He enjoys straying away from the path and exploring new perspectives. He is a difficult companion during the best of times and his methods are questionable if not outright dangerous. He is in good spirits and shines most when everyone else is miserable, dehydrated and cannot tell their sweat from their tears. There is a madness to his ways but in the end it usually works out.

Angela and Michael Greer, Twonie ProjectMoroccan Honeymoon / |
1) Moroccan Honeymoon
Five weeks on the road; will the marriage survive?
Sharing a love for travel and adventure, newlyweds Michael and Angela envision travelling the world by motorcycle when Michael retires in 2022. Although both are experienced travellers, their styles are quite different: Angela has enjoyed day trips from tropical five-star resorts, while Michael's previous adventures include backpacking in East Africa, scuba diving in Thailand and working with orphans in rural Bolivia.
In preparation for their upcoming RTW adventure, Michael and Angela set out on a trip to test some new bikes, a new travel style and a new relationship. Learn what they discovered about themselves, each other, and about riding a couple of Africa Twins as Michael and Angela present the humour and the trials of their adventurous honeymoon in Morocco.
2) The 10-Year Journey to Day One
What goes into preparing for a RTW motorcycle adventure?
Michael and Angela (Twonie Project) have just commenced their 10-year, round-the-world motorcycle adventure, but it took them a decade just to get to day one. Learning, planning, tests and trials, raising kids, and retiring all had to happen! Come hear the process they went through to determine which bikes, upgrades and equipment to take, the style of travel they chose, how they determined their budget, and what the plan is for the next ten years.
MICHAEL's 24-year naval career has allowed him to live in six countries and have adventures in over 40 more across six continents. ANGELA has travelled to over 20 countries. They spent their honeymoon riding through Morocco, confirming that a life on the road with each other was the right decision!

Fred Walti, The Restless Traveller60 Days Through 10 European Countries / |
1) 60 Days Through 10 European Countries
Part travelogue, part practical guide
We had no plan and lots of time. My wife and I spent 60 days last summer riding through France, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Amsterdam and England on a rented BMW. This wasn't our first rodeo, but it was the first time we went on an extended trip at our age (over 70), which makes it a different ballgame. Along the way we went to the Belgium Formula1 at SPA and the Goodwood Revival, two events that I would highly recommend for car/bike lovers. Not quite as good as the Isle of Man TT, but really good. In addition to a travelogue, there will be a fair amount of practical advice on renting a m/c, how to pack, how to figure each day's trip (we had no plans beforehand), what to look out for and what to look for.
2) Is There A Use-By Date for Motorcycling?
Getting older sucks, but does that mean we can't ride?
This question that I keep thinking about is, Am I just too old to ride a motorcycle anymore? Should I find something else to do? The question is nothing new as you'll, but here it is again. After all, motorcycling isn't like golf, if you hit it out of bounds you don't just take a Mulligan. Chances are, there's a more serious price to pay. Yet, for those of us who ride, it's a passion that's hard to shake off for too many reasons to explain here. I've been riding since I was 15 and its still a central part of my life. This session is for "more mature" riders who have/are contemplating this question. There might be a few slides, but most of it with be interactive with all of us sharing our experience and thoughts. BTW, my answer to this question is no.
FRED WALTI (the "speed dating version", according to him): Boy motorcycle racer, adult AdMan, Internet Titan, serial entrepreneur, and founding CEO of the most successful cleantech incubator in the world. He raced on the banks of Daytona and has travelled to 52 countries, mostly on a motorcycle.

Craig HaggartFly+Ride Mini Adventures / |
CRAIG HAGGART operates an electron accelerator in Palo Alto, California, and enjoys minor adventures like riding a Ninja 250 to Baja, moto-camping in the southwest on a CBR600 sport bike, racing a 1966 Honda CB160, riding in Costa Rica and Nicaragua on rented bikes, and, of course, volunteering at Horizons Unlimited California.
1) Fly+Ride Mini Adventures
It's a common dream to ditch everything and go on a round-the-world ride, but that dream just isn't practical for many of us due to career and family commitments. There is an option, however, for scratching that adventure-ride itch: fly somewhere and ride a rented bike for a few weeks! The focus here will be on Latin America, but if you have recent experience with other destinations, please feel free to join in and share any practical details that might help fellow riders.
2) Smaller Bikes for ADV Riding
Most of us have probably heard the truism that nobody comes home from an adventure ride saying, "I wish I'd ridden a larger bike." While that might not match everyone's experience, it is clear that lots of people do amazing trips on small -- sometimes VERY small -- motorcycles. If you've ever wondered about the practicality of doing a bit of adventure riding on a bike that you could actually pick up if it falls over, please join this discussion about the pros and cons of preparing and riding smaller bikes for travel. If you have personal experience to share, all the better -- audience participation is gladly encouraged!
3) How NOT to Ship a Bike to Panama
As they say, adventure starts when your plans go awry
I've always wanted to ride from my home near San Francisco, California, to the end of the road in Yaviza, Panama, but never had enough time to make the trip there and back. So for my big 65th birthday, I tried to arrange shipping my Honda CB500 to Panama and riding it home. The bike, however, never made it beyond Florida. I ended up unloading the bike from its crate in a Miami warehouse, then riding to Guanajuato, Mexico, over to Mazatlan, and up the eastern coast of the Sea of Cortez, and back home. Shipping to Panama may not have worked out, but riding in Mexico was excellent!
Workshops and Tech Sessions
Because Horizons Unlimited events are about informing, not just inspiring, we also have a great lineup of educational sessions for you...

Under Asian Skies - The most colourful and culturally diverse part of the world?
Asia and the Middle East frequently have the reputation for being one of the most troubled parts of the world. Should an Overlander fear this reputation and stay at home? Common sense says not to expect smoke without fire, but that frequently the fire is tiny and should not extinguish dreams of travel across this stunningly beautiful continent. The terrain and cultural diversity make it almost impossible for a traveller not to be enthralled, challenged and delighted. This is a true continent of the unexpected. Give it enough time and respect and it will reveal its delights to you. Is Asia the most colourful and culturally diverse part of the world? I think so. But why?
Travel Addiction - It's a dangerous thing isn't it?
Parents, lock up your children! Don't let them anywhere near Horizons Unlimited! They will come away having a taste for something dangerous! This addiction will make them afraid and uncertain, and will bring things out of them that you may well prefer to remain hidden. It needs expensive long term care and careful handling. Be warned, your medical insurance company provides no cover for this. Travel. It's a downright dangerous, mind altering drug of the worst kind... isn't it? So how do you cope with the uncertainties and the risks?
Sam made his first solo trip age 16. He's travelled by bicycle, sail, backpack & has hitchhiked across Europe, Australia and New Zealand. His longest trip was 8 years & 200,000 miles by motorcycle around the world. Sam is a travel writer & author of 4 motorcycle travel books.
Excerpt from Sam's best-selling book, Under Asian Skies:
"... the blue van smashed into the bike from the left. It hurled us across to the central reservation, and I ended up wedged under the bike with petrol pouring out of the carburettors onto my legs…. On the other side of the reservation cars sped past, just by my head. I could hear them and feel their draft, but trapped under the bike I couldn't twist enough to see them or get further away. The first three people to get to me roared up on bikes. They were Australian Hell's Angels..."
'One of the best story tellers of adventure in the world today!'
'Gripping from start to finish. 'Truly inspiring writing!'

2) Communications Seminar
The future of communications is NOT the future - it is here.
Remember when you all walked by our booth and said, "Bluetooth is not here yet"? Then years later you now say, "Bluetooth is too complicated". This seminar shows you that Bluetooth is "here" now and is only as complicated as you make it. There are choices for you now. Think outside the box. Alex GrayWhen to Push and When to Quit |
Having made some poor choices on the trail and learned a lot of things the hard way, I have been focusing on making adventure off-road riding more enjoyable. Preparing for failures along the way shapes my experiences in fundamental ways. When it comes to exploring off-road, my decisions often become key to my survival. Sometimes I find myself riding downhill and the adrenaline rush pushes me beyond my limits and past the point of no return. Can we better prepare for exploring the unknown? How do we make better decisions about ourselves and our vehicle? What do we do if riding in a group and one person wants to push further than the others? What do we do if we are stuck? I will explore my findings to these and other questions and look forward to discussing them as a group.
ALEX GRAY is addicted to travelling. He enjoys straying away from the path and exploring new perspectives. He is a difficult companion during the best of times and his methods are questionable if not outright dangerous. Gene ShermanCritical Fitness & Food for Adventure Riders |
Adventure riding is physically and mentally demanding on our bodies and if our fitness or nutrition is neglected, bad things can happen. Fit and well fed humans withstand fatigue, are less injury prone, are more alert, are better riders, and are able to endure long distances safely. In this presentation I will cut through the BS that we are "fed" from the media, exercise experts, and fad diet people. I'll keep it simple and provide science-based solutions to the most effective exercises and eating habits. This critical information can be use before, during, and after you epic rides. I'll show you how to move from illness, to wellness, and then to fitness. My goal is this: By sharing these simple suggestions I want to extend your life, extend your rides, and (if you cannot yet) get you to pick up your big adventure bike!
GENE SHERMAN is a lifelong maker, inventor, author, teacher, public speaker, motorcycle rider, and Crossfit coach. His motorcycles have ranged from trials, to cruisers, and dual sports, but adventure bikes give him the most joy. He has ridden all over the southwestern U.S. and looks forward for his RTW trip in the future.

Jenny Morgan A Serow for the 21st Century |
Recommended: Attend Jenny's talk "Double or Nothing" first
Jenny presents her brand new light-weight all-terrain travel bike, built around the latest Honda CRF300L platform with a focus on an even more minimalist approach solo overland adventure riding. With the introduction of the Honda CRF300 series in 2021, Jenny worked together with Rally-Raid products in the UK to upgrade the weaker and budget elements of these affordable dual-sport motorcycles, making them even more capable for overland travel with an off-road bias. Jenny has purposely chosen to optimise the manageability of her personal bike in tougher terrain; and in turn this example ought to be particularly interesting to those riders who tend to struggle with the taller seat height and heavier weight of larger 'adventure' motorcycles.

Campsite & parking
The extensive campsite area is on flat, well-drained, ground with a few 10amp power hook-ups and water outlets. There are a number of secluded areas nestled next to woodland as well as RV parking around the perimeter of the main camping area.
If you need to use the electric hook-ups there are some through the grounds.
Motorcycles will be allowed to park in the camping area. RVs will have a separate parking area. Cars, vans & trucks with trailers must be parked in the main parking lot. Please help to conserve the fields for future events by not skidding, wheel-spinning, etc. The organizers reserve the right to restrict vehicle movement and parking subject to weather and ground conditions.
Note: Camping prior to Thursday is $20/night and payable in cash to the fairgrounds.
No Fires
There's a strict 'no fires' policy across the whole site, but camping stoves and BBQs are allowed. There will be no individual camp fires allowed. There may be a group camp fire.
The official bonfire!
Noise
Our contract with the venue has a midnight noise curfew. This applies to music and also if you're staying offsite, please leave quietly after midnight and be considerate of the older folks who are trying to sleep. ;-)
Showers & Toilets
There are 12 showers in 2 separate buildings by the camping area as well as the many toilets. The toilets and showers, and all the areas within the grounds have wheelchair access.
Children & Dogs
Horizons Unlimited is naturally keen to inspire the next generation of adventure travelers so you're welcome to bring your children along if you wish, but do bear in mind that the event is for adults (with adult themes and language) and we won't have any specific kids' activities. Children under 14 years old get in for free. Please note that the health and safety of your children is your responsibility and they must be supervised by you at all times. Children will not be allowed in any of the presentations from 8pm onwards each evening.
You'll need to ensure your pet remains on a lead at all times and doesn't damage or foul the site. Owners of noisy or aggressive dogs may be asked to leave.

Be a Presenter
We're inviting submissions for presentations, so whether you're attending the event or exploring a distant continent, if you've got a story to tell or expertise to share we'd like to hear from you.
We love to hear stories about your travel adventures, especially if you have great pics! Also, practical how-to sessions such as roadside cooking, navigation / GPS, trip prep and planning, adventure motorcycling medicine, packing light, setting your bike up, communications / blogging from the road, self-publishing your story, yoga for bikers, bodging / bike maintenance, self-defense, photography, videography, tire repair, safe riding techniques, how to pick up your bike, off-road riding, all are of interest.
There are 45 minute and 100 minute sessions available for talks, workshops, demos and live web chats.
Click here to submit your ideas
PLEASE NOTE:
Submitting a Presenter registration DOES NOT mean you will automatically be included in the schedule, as we can have more presenters than available presentation slots. We will confirm one way or the other as soon as we can (but not immediately!)

If you're planning an expedition, why not make the Horizons Unlimited meeting your official start point? Or maybe you're nearing the completion of a journey and would like a very public welcome home? Of course you might just be passing through and fancy marking a key stage of your travels?

New to Horizons Unlimited?
Horizons Unlimited was founded in 1997 by Grant and Susan Johnson following their journey around the world on a BMW R80 G/S motorcycle. The website, HUBB forum and regular events across the globe have inspired thousands of people to follow their dreams and take the road less travelled.

Membership - Show you're proud to be a Horizons Unlimited Traveller!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love overland adventure travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events such as this one (18 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, the HUBB or to receive the e-zine. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
You can join at a reduced rate as part of your meeting registration. Note that new Memberships with your Meeting Registration are applied as of the Meeting date or as soon as possible thereafter, not earlier, unless you make a special request in the Comments box when you register.
